About the Business & Economics Department and the Accounting Major

The Department of Business & Economics offers a major and a minor in accounting. The accounting major provides the student with a thorough preparation in the theory and practice of accounting, a body of knowledge in management, and a solid foundation in the liberal arts. The accounting courses are designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in a public accounting firm, corporation, government agency or a non-profit organization.

Many career opportunities are open to accounting majors including, auditing, managerial accounting, banking, taxation, investments, consulting, and high school or college teaching. The major also provides an excellent background for graduate business school and/or law school. Experiential learning is a required component of the program and as such, at least one internship is required of all accounting majors.

Students who successfully complete the accounting major are qualified to sit for the CPA examination in Massachusetts and may have to take additional courses beyond the baccalaureate to meet the 150-hour credit requirement for licensure.
