State of Massachusetts Economist III in Boston, Massachusetts

This position reports directly to the Ma. Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) Commissioner’s Office and supports agency Divisions and programs, as necessary. Key duties include:

  1. Providing economic, statistical, and industry analysis of current commodity specific agricultural conditions and; communication of analysis to relevant audiences including agency staff, industry, and media.

  2. Work with staff and the Massachusetts farming community to analyze and communicate the economic impact of Massachusetts agriculture and MDAR's initiatives to assist and improve economic conditions of Massachusetts farmers.

  3. Administer the Dairy tax credit and retail milk licensing programs including the fluid milk coupon program for promotional and marketing campaigns of milk and cream for consumer use and benefit.

  4. Undertake special projects such as "Task Forces"; and other projects as assigned by the Commissioner’s Office.

  5. Provide economic analysis of upcoming 2017 USDA Census of Agriculture to be released in 2018 (as compared to 2012 and previous Census data).

Education and/or experience in the field of economics with a focus on agribusiness, marketing and/or other facets of agriculture preferred.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the field of economics, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in economics may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.*

II. A Graduate degree with a major in economics may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required experience.*

III. A Bachelor's or higher degree with major other than in economics may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
