English Instructor, Veterans Upward Bound, Part-time Grant-funded
The Suffolk University Veterans Upward Bound program funded by the U.S. Department of Education has been created to help qualified military veterans develop the necessary skills to enroll and succeed in postsecondary education. Veterans receive educational support, advising and an individualized education plan. They take courses in mathematics, laboratory science, composition and literature, and foreign language. Veterans may participate in study skills, tutoring, academic and personal counseling, financial aid planning, college application seminars and cultural events as well. This position reports to the Veterans Upward Bound Director. The English Instructor is responsible for creating and managing the course syllabus, managing class schedules and setting class expectations and ground rules, abiding by grading policies, encouraging class participation, assigning a sufficient amount of homework as needed, and will be expected to create and manage contact notes. Open flexibility is asked in the event other job related tasks are requested within reason.Primary/Principal Responsibilities:Course Design: Each instructor is expected to develop a course syllabus incorporating interactive and hands on components that reflect 21st century methods to prepare students for college level instruction. Instructors will plan courses for 3 hours per day twice a week by preparing lesson plans, course work, and homework assignments.The instructor will establish ground rules and expectations for all participants.Record Keeping and Reporting: Instructors will be required to submit course reports and maintain records for program compliance that detail the progress of participants in their courses.Instruction: Instructors will deliver class content to participants enrolled in the Veterans Upward Bound program through face-to-face classes and utilize virtual means to interface with students from a distance.Evaluation: Instructors will assess participants using a variety of educational platforms to diagnose student levels and to measure progress in academic domains. Instructors will also provide program feedback regarding the instructional components of the VUB program.Other duties as assigned.Requirements/Qualifications:• Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Literature, Technical Writing, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.• Certification or provisional certification in a subject area at the secondary or college level preferred.• Experience in an academic environment pertaining to curriculum development and or student assessment• 3 to 5 professional years of experience with demonstrated commitment to working with adult learners and veterans from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.• Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and organizational skills• Strong computer proficiency• Experience working effectively with diverse populations• Must be able to commit to working a set schedule for evening courses for a maximum of 15 hours per week.• Flexibility to participate and/ or attend program or veterans-related events in the evening, morning, and or weekend on occasion• Military or experience working in veterans’ services is preferred*This position is grant funded. Employment beyond the cycle of the grant is contingent upon a successful grant funding.
