Duties & Responsibilities
The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies (ADUS) in Computer Science. The successful candidate will assist with the management of the undergraduate computer science concentration. The ADUS will report academically to the Area Dean for Computer Science and administratively to the Assistant Dean for Education. The ADUS will work closely with the Directors of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) for Computer Science, as well as with other ADUSes and DUSes at SEAS.

Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.



  • Serve as the first point of contact for students in the Computer Science concentration, providing academic advising and guidelines on policy to admitted Harvard students, pre-concentrators, and concentrators.

  • Mentor and advise undergraduate students and monitor student progress toward degree.

  • In coordination with relevant offices at SEAS and Harvard College, advise current students in their pursuit of undergraduate research opportunities, internships, and full-time positions.

  • Perform administrative management of the relevant concentrations and tracks, including updating literature, curriculum documentation, study plan forms, and websites.

  • With assistance from the Area Coordinator, host occasional community-building events for computer science pre-concentrators and concentrators.

  • Advise teaching staff on pedagogy, and offer periodic trainings for undergraduate and graduate students working as teaching staff.


Additional duties and responsibilities may include the following:



  • If of interest to the applicant, teach or co-teach up to one undergraduate computer science course per semester; the position would then include a concurrent dependent lectureship in computer science.

  • Assist with mentorship of relevant computer science clubs, including Women in Computer Science (WiCS), Developers for Development, Hack Harvard, and others.

  • Assist with curriculum and course development, course planning, and new pedagogical methods.







Basic Qualifications


This position requires a doctorate degree.




Additional Qualifications


Strong preference will be given to candidates with a doctorate degree (e.g. Ph.D.) in computer science or a related field. Candidates must possess excellent communication skills; the motivation to help build a broad-based undergraduate computer science community at Harvard; and a strong commitment to education and mentoring.
