Duties & Responsibilities The Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (URAF) administers over 50 Harvard-specific research and fellowships programs, scholarship prizes, and non-academic awards, and oversees the institutional processes for prestigious national fellowships including the Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright, and Truman Scholarships (among others). URAF is the institutional hub for policy and processes related to undergraduate research across the Harvard universe. The Assistant Director provides expert information and advice on all Harvard research and fellowships programs, and major national fellowships for Harvard College. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Research and Fellowships advising Advise students on writing/developing fellowships essays and project proposals, and improving interviewing skills.Initiate outreach to departments and residential Houses; plan and conduct information meetings, workshops, and panel discussions.Provide program information and guidance to House Fellowships Advisors.In collaboration with Director and other Assistant Directors compose and edit all online or paper publications, advising/training materials, and related communications for the office. Research and Fellowships program management Prepare and process research and fellowships applications materials; read all applications; review and provide feedback on applications; write and coordinate institutional nomination letters. Manage special alumni-funded fellowship programs, and assist with the administration of the Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village programs.Manage the entire selection process for specific research and fellowship competitions as delegated by the Director.Recruit, schedule, and manage faculty selection committees; serve on selection committees as a non-voting member and source of expert information on research and fellowship programs. Research and Fellowships department administration Manage the Undergraduate Research and Fellowships website content and promotional materials.Ensure that research program participants and fellowships recipients, selection committees, and domestic/international vendors and programs receive their stipends, reimbursements, tuition and fees, and all other payments in a timely fashion.Monitor fellowships recipients in the field in collaboration with the University’s health and safety team (Global Support Services).Collaborate with and provide guidance to academic departments, major administrative offices, and research centers across campus on matters of policy and processes.Cultivate and maintain relationships with national fellowships sponsors; peer institution colleagues; and overseas university faculty and tutors.Ensure timely payment of stipends and reimbursements to constituents.Steward donor/alumni relations.
Basic Qualifications Bachelors degree required. 3+ years of teaching, advising, or administrative experience in a university. Experience with research, fellowships and international study and travel.
Additional Qualifications Master’s degree preferred. Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators, national fellowships sponsors, other university colleagues and international partners; excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills; familiarity with Harvard and foreign universities preferred. Broad intellectual interests, and the ability to read and evaluate proposals to provide methodological feedback across a variety of disciplines. Ability to use or learn a variety of software and databases and application platforms, with special emphasis on web platforms and web page creation. Experience working with confidential and sensitive materials; discretion and seasoned judgment; attention to details; excellent organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven environment managing multiple projects with ease.
