Duties & Responsibilities The Associate Director leads the formulation of a vision and strategy to pilot, expand, and sustain a Professional Learning Initiative contributing to improving instructional practices in primary and secondary schools in the Middle East (focusing on Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine). The initiative comprises programs and activities that build capacity for teachers in a variety of formal and non-formal settings. It promotes instruction that is relevant and learner-centered and builds capacity for school leaders as well so they can serve as instructional leaders. The initiative involves regional stakeholders in hosting "think tanks" and other opportunities for practitioners and researchers to build understanding of and address significant education challenges in the region. Finally the initiative involves working with stakeholders to develop online and blended learning experiences to serve teachers in the region. This includes recruiting and training a cadre of online instructional coaches and staff to support the delivery of these programs.
The Associate Director will build and engage with a network of stakeholders and advisors locally, nationally, and internationally in order to align the work with other regional strategic initiatives in professional education. The role involves program design, development, and management, developing and managing budgets, and developing policies and procedures for awarding scholarships.
The Associate Director will be a member of the program management team within Professional Education responsible for working with faculty to develop Professional Education's portfolio of online and face-to-face programs for education practitioners across the PreK-16 spectrum. The team is tasked with identifying the needs of education practitioners and collaborating with faculty to create learning experiences that match practitioners' needs and resources. The position will report to the Director of Pre-K-12 and International Programs and work closely with members of the marketing, admissions, finance, and program operations team within PPE as well as with HGSE Admissions, degree program offices, research centers, and other departments within the Harvard community.
Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of current events and the broad political dynamics of the Middle East region as well as the socio-cultural characteristics of individual countries and local contexts. Cross-cultural competencies and a background in professional and adult learning, together with knowledge of the teaching profession and international education models, will be helpful in understanding and formulating an approach to serving teachers and education leaders within these contexts. The position involves regular travel to the region. This is a two year term position with the possibility of extension.
Basic Qualifications An advanced degree is required. Applicants must have facility with research, both conducting small-scale program evaluations and analyzing research papers and reports. Fluency in Arabic. Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills. Previous experience developing and managing budgets, program design, development and management, as well as academic expertise and experience in an area relevant to the position (e.g., international education policy, policies and practices that advance teaching and learning, social entrepreneurship, outreach and community engagement). Strong applicants will have experience with teacher professional development.
Must be willing to travel regularly to the region.
