Duties & Responsibilities
This position reports directly to the Associate Dean & Dean of Students ("DoS") and will be part of the Dean of Students Office (DoSO). The Director of Community Engagement & Equity ("DCEE") will manage Harvard Law School's (HLS) efforts to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all of its students both inside and outside the classroom.

There are four key goals of the Director's role:

1. Build programming to support 1L Sections that will create culture of "belonging", inclusion and diversity and support 1L Sections acclimate to law school at HLS
2. Provide support to students across a spectrum of diverse backgrounds, with a special focus on historically underrepresented groups;
3. Develop and implement a broad range of programs and services that promote inclusion, equality, and community within HLS both inside and outside the classroom;
4. Assist in building diversity, inclusion, and equity programs through the Dean of Students Office in collaboration with various offices at HLS such as Admissions, Office of Career Services, Office of Public Interest Advising, Student Financial Services, Library, Office of Clinical and Pro bono Programs, Graduate Program, Academic Advising and Legal Writing, Programs of Study, Registrar, and Academic Affairs.

Specific Duties include:

• The DCEE will serve as a standing ex officio member of the Student Life & Healthy Life in the Law Initiative Committee;
• Provide support, counseling, and referrals to JD and LL.M. students on issues concerning equity, inclusion, and diversity;
• Advise students from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds, with a special focus on developing relationships with and working through concerns of students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, whether religious, socioeconomic, racial, gender/sexual identity, or political;
• Requires working with DoS on developing plans to resolve concerns in the classroom when concerns about possible bias or insensitivity are raised by students about other students or faculty;
• Creates and/or implements a range of programs for students to promote cultural competency and civil discourse and to explore the intersection of social justice and various forms of diversity;
• Builds and leverages coalitions of faculty, student groups, journals, centers/institutes, and various administrative offices and staff to plan programs that meet HLS's unique needs. Examples of programs include sensitivity and cultural competence training, community discussions, academic symposia, diversity receptions, alumni networking, and celebrations in collaboration with other Student Services Offices and DoSO staff;
• Leads research on information and ideas on implementing best practices for classrooms discussions that are inclusive for all students. This may involve developing a library of pedagogical resources, creating programs, lectures/speakers, and research on issues of diversity and inclusion in the classroom;
• Advising, counseling, and/or referring students on academic issues;
• Assisting in managing the Title IX dockets if necessary and creating and promoting education and prevention programming. This can include, but is not limited to, Bystander/Upstander Intervention training and advising and helping to build Peer to Peer programs;
• The DCEE will confer with the Dean of Students when students raise concerns about insensitive or biased conduct or comments.

Basic Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree is required with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role or with similar responsibilities. One to 2 years of experience in higher education required.

Additional Qualifications
A Master's Degree or JD strongly preferred. With a JD, 2 or 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney preferred. Prior experience with working on Title IX or sexual harassment and gender violence prevention as well as 1 to 2 years of working in higher education either before or after law school preferred. Strong interpersonal communication skills with high emotional intelligence. Ability to prepare and present written and oral presentations. Must feel comfortable working collaboratively across a spectrum of offices, organizations, and people. Comfortable with improvisation when necessary.
