Successful candidates will have outstanding research and writing skills. Background in teaching and/or curriculum development at the secondary level is strongly preferred but not required.

Evidence of outstanding academic achievement. Indication of independent research experience and/or applied experience. Proven ability to work independently and creatively. This position requires an individual capable of consistent use of discretion, judgment, and initiative.

Ability to read academic, subject-specific information and write a reasoned and thoughtful analysis necessary. Diplomatic skills, comfort in interacting with prominent individuals, and grace under pressure are essential. Strong skills related to the Microsoft Office Suite are expected. Applicants should be prepared to submit writing samples and transcripts upon request.

The candidate must have extremely high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, strong organization skills, and absolute commitment to task completion. He or she must be able to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary. It is helpful if the candidate is familiar with navigating a complex organization, such as Harvard Business School.

HBS seeks a Research Associate (RA) to join the High School Case Method Project (HSCMP). This project has been formed to explore the feasibility of bringing case-method teaching into high school classrooms. Based on the success of case-method teaching at Harvard Business School and countless other graduate and professional programs, there is now interest in exploring whether the case method can strengthen secondary education as well, ensuring a more exciting, relevant, and effective experience for both students and teachers.

In 2015-16, a small team at Harvard Business School organized a preliminary pilot study, based on the “History of the American Democracy” course, which was originally designed for students at Harvard College and Harvard Business School. The pilot study involved nearly two-dozen high school teachers from across the country who participated in a two-day workshop at HBS where they were introduced to the case method and a set of historical case studies drawn from the History of American Democracy course.

We are now seeking to expand the in-school pilot program and to refine case study materials and teacher training methodology as the foundation for a large-scale rollout. Expansion of the program will have the goal of identifying and training up to 100 teachers per year and developing a significantly expanded case library for participating teachers over an initial three-year timeframe.

Primary Duties:

The RA position reports directly to faculty supervisors and administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. The RA will help develop historical case studies, and associated teaching materials, for high school students while working under the general direction of HBS faculty (which includes several PhD historians), on topics central to the High School Case Method Project.

Ideal RA candidates will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence, intellectual curiosity and the ability to use discretionary judgment. Under the general direction of Faculty members, the RA will:

  • Revise and restructure existing historical case studies, originally prepared for undergraduate and graduate students, for a high school audience.

  • Develop new historical cases for high school students under the supervision of faculty members and the senior course developer.

  • Develop associated teaching materials for all cases, including teaching plans, supplementary worksheets, etc.

  • Develop and implement a project plan and timeline for revising and/or developing each case and associated teaching materials focusing on one or two cases at a time.
