Department Summary: The Office of Financial Aid assists students and their families in accessing the funds needed to afford a Fitchburg State University education. We administer federal, state and institutional financial aid programs and maintain compliance with regulatory guidelines. Our services include assisting students through the application process and providing timely award notifications so students can make informed decisions about the affordability of a Fitchburg State University education. Our office provides a service-oriented, confidential environment where students and their families can seek the advice of an experienced staff who provide assistance in obtaining the best financial aid opportunities available. Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Financial Aid, the assistant director shall assist in the planning, organization and administration of the student financial aid programs of the University. The assistant director manages a student caseload as well as specific program responsibilities. Position Type: APA Professional General Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Assists, students and parents in all phases of the financial aid application process, from the application itself, to verifying awards, and evaluating financial aid appeals. 2. Reviews, processes, and awards funds from all programs for designated student caseload. 3. Counsels student aid applicants and parents regarding both short-term (payment plan) and long-term (loan) options and rights and responsibilities regarding these options. 4. Assists in the administration of all federal, state and institutional aid programs. 5. Participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of department policies and procedures. 6. Works in conjunction with the Admissions Office and other offices on student recruitment as it relates to the financial aid process. This includes participating in events on and off campus. 7. Assists in the implementation of workshops both on and off campus designed to educate the campus and the external community about financial aid opportunities. 8. Assists in the daily operations of the office as necessary including front counter customer service, phones, mailings, data entry and retrieval, and file organization. 9. Other duties as assigned by the Director. Qualifications: 1. Bachelor?s degree required. 2. A minimum of one year experience in financial aid or equivalent higher education experience. 3. Experience with file review and awarding of financial aid. 4. Experience working directly with student populations. 5. Ability to express self clearly in written and oral communication. 6. Ability to work effectively with all members of the college community. 7. Strong customer service skills. 8. Experience with financial aid application procedures and computerized need analysis systems. 9. Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI) as well as a completed background check satisfactory to the university. 10. Ability to perform above duties with or without reasonable accommodations. Preferred Qualifications: 1. Experience with Banner Computer Software System. 2. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish
