Fitchburg State University Assistant Professor- Earth and Geographi in Fitchburg, Massachusetts

General Statement of Duties: Full-time, tenure-track, assistant professor in Earth and Geographic Sciences. Teach introductory and upper-level Environmental and Earth Science courses. Terminal degree in Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geology, or related discipline required, with teaching experience preferred. Supervision Received: Department Chair of Earth and Geographic Sciences Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Teaching work load (24 semester hours of credit of instruction per school year), and preparation for classroom instruction. 2. A shared responsibility for teaching introductory Earth Science and Geology courses. Area of specialization for upper level courses is open but preference for some combination of the following: Hydrogeology, Structural Geology, and Environmental Geology. New course development, especially in soil science, water resources, environmental science, and environmental health is also encouraged. 3. Supervise internships or independent studies. 4. Provide student assistance including academic advising. 5. Participate in curriculum review and development, program reviews and student outcomes assessment and departmental and college-wide committees. 6. Attend university functions, including commencement, convocation, and faculty, committee and department meetings. 7. Participate in scheduled orientation and registration programs. 8. Engage in continuing scholarship and professional activities, which may include contribution to the content of the discipline, participation in or contribution to professional organizations and societies, public service and contributions to the professional growth and development of the university community. 9. Opportunities to teach summer, winter term, online, and undergraduate and graduate evening courses. Qualifications: 1. Terminal degree in Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geology, or related fields required, with teaching experience preferred. 2. Ability to teach introductory and upper-level Earth and Environmental Science courses, with an ability to incorporate theoretical knowledge and frameworks in new/emerging developments as appropriate. 3. The successful candidate should bring an active research agenda and a fresh pedagogical perspective while providing students with a solid foundation in Earth Science. 4. Ability to integrate appropriate technology and software in teaching. 5. Commitment to excellence in teaching, demonstrated teaching experience appropriate to the level of appointment, and evidence of scholarly/creative activity. 6. Ability to work effectively with a diverse student body. 7. Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI) as well as a completed background check satisfactory to the university. 8.
