Classroom Coach, Readiness through Integrative Science and Engineering (RISE) Project - Department of Child Study and Human Development - 17001181

There are multiple openings for this position. This is a grant-funded, limited appointment position, and is not eligible for severance pay. This is an academic year, part-time position at 17 hours per week.

RISE is a National Science Foundation-funded 3-year project with Boston ABCD Head Start programs, located in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development. RISE focuses on developing ecologically valid, culturally relevant integrative preschool curriculum components and home-school connections as critical dimensions to support young DLL children’s school success. The key elements of RISE include:(1) science, technology and engineering (STE) early learning as it develops with other school readiness skills (i.e., approaches to learning); and (2) home-school connections (HSC) forged through authentic exploration of meaningful family knowledge, activities, and routines related to STE. The final product of the RISE project will include a set of processes for integrating STE and HSC, as well as specific curricular activities and materials.

The RISE Classroom Coach implements training, coaching cycles, and professional learning communities to advance preschool teachers’ science and engineering pedagogical knowledge, skills, and dispositions. This person will have responsibility for working with the Co-PIs, larger Tufts team, and Head Start colleagues to a) build knowledge of early science and engineering frameworks applied to ECE; b) support the alignment and integration of the RISE curriculum with existing Head Start curriculum and lesson planning frameworks implemented by the Head Start program; and c) provide classroom coaching to support teachers with co-constructing and implementing the RISE curriculum. With guidance from the Co-PIs and Tufts Project Team, Classroom Coaches are expected to a) learn the RISE curriculum, b) document and reflect regularly on their coaching practice to increase fidelity and identify and make adjustments to teacher- and setting-specific conditions to increase their coaching effectiveness and teachers’ learning and practice change, and c) contribute to the evaluation and refinement of the RISE curriculum. This is a limited term appointment (17 hours/week) based roughly on the academic year (Aug 10, 2017-June 14, 2018 and Aug. 15, 2018-June 13, 2019 (pending continuing funding).

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a related field.
  • Prek-2 or any teaching license that includes preschool.
  • Minimum of five years experience with preschool-age children and programs, including classroom teaching and providing professional development to early childhood professionals.
  • Experience providing support to pre-service or in-service early childhood teachers.
  • Microsoft Office.
  • Experience coaching teachers in a preschool or early childhood is a must.
  • Preschool classroom experience is also required.
  • The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate potential to engage in collaborative work with the full RISE team, including researchers, Tufts students, and Head Start personnel and families.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in early childhood education or related field.
  • Knowledge of early childhood curriculum, child assessment, and teacher-child interactions and instruction.
  • Experience with curriculum development, especially in early childhood.
  • Experience serving diverse populations.
  • Experience teaching dual language learners.
  • Expertise in early STEM teaching and learning.
  • Experience with formal classroom observation systems (e. g., CLASS).
  • Proven ability to function independently as well as cooperatively as a supportive team member, work with diverse early childhood staff and populations.
  • Willingness to work in programs located in high-risk, low-income communities.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Participation in occasional weekend planning days and team meetings is expected as well as occasional late afternoon/early evening meetings with Head Start teachers.
