Lead Coach, Readiness through Integrative Science and Engineering (RISE) Project - Department of Child Study and Human Development - 17001166
This is limited appointment position ending June 2019. This is also a grant funded position and is not eligible for severance pay. This part-time position is 25 hours per week.
RISE is a National Science Foundation-funded 3-year project with Boston ABCD Head Start programs, located in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development. RISE focuses on developing ecologically valid, culturally relevant integrative preschool curriculum components and home-school connections as critical dimensions to support young DLL children’s school success. The key elements of RISE include:
(1) science, technology and engineering (STE) early learning as it develops with other school readiness skills (i.e., approaches to learning)
(2) home-school connections (HSC) forged through authentic exploration of meaningful family knowledge, activities, and routines related to STE. The final product of the RISE project will include a set of processes for integrating STE and HSC, as well as specific curricular activities and materials.
The RISE Lead Coach is responsible for working with the Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs) and Tufts Project team to ensure Classroom Coaches implement the RISE curriculum and professional development strategies with fidelity and effectiveness. Specifically, with supervision and guidance from the Co-PIs and Tufts Project Team, the RISE Lead Coach:
(a) monitors and supports the Classroom Coaches’ implementation of coaching and professional learning communities with teachers and communication with leaders;
(b) ensures the Classroom Coaches complete documentation and reflection in a timely manner;
(c) assists the Classroom Coaches to identify and make adjustments to teacher- and setting-specific conditions to increase their effectiveness and teachers’ learning and practice change;
(d) supports the iterative design of the RISE curriculum, coaching materials, and professional learning community protocols;
(e) acts as liaison to Head Start leadership to ensure RISE goals are achieved with their respective site; and
(f) contributes to the evaluation of the RISE project.
This is a limited appointment (25 hours per week). The RISE Lead Coach enters the project in Year 1 (April, 2017) and exits the project in Year 3 (June, 2019).
- Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, special education, or related education field
- Prek-2 or any teaching license that includes preschool
- Minimum of two years of early childhood classroom experience with the 3-5 age group; and minimum of five years of experience in leadership positions providing support and professional development to early childhood professionals
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Experience with coaching in a preschool or early primary grades is a must. Preschool classroom teaching experience is also required. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate potential to engage in collaborative work with the full RISE team, including researchers, Tufts students, and Head Start personnel and families.
- Masters degree in early childhood education or related field;
- Knowledge of early childhood curriculum, child assessment, and teacher-child interactions and instruction;
- Experience with curriculum development, especially in early childhood;
- Experience serving diverse populations;
- Experience teaching dual language learners;
- Willingness to work in programs located in high-risk, low-income communities;
- Expertise in early STEM teaching and learning;
- Experience with formal classroom observation systems (e. g., CLASS)
- Proven ability to function independently as a leader as well as a cooperative and supportive team member. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Experience with reflective practice and supervision, as well as using data in the process of professional development and program improvement.
