Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Director, Archives and Digital Initiatives is responsible for strategic development and management of the Wallace Library Special Collections, Digital Initiatives, and Marion B. Gebbie Archives.

Responsibilities of the Director, Archives and Digital Initiatives include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide leadership and vision for the department and oversee all activities, including collection assessment and development, access and preservation, and outreach and instruction.
• Guide and promote the ongoing development of physical and digital collections, services, and programs to serve the academic mission of Wheaton College.
• Work with Library and College leadership to develop policies and a strategic plan for the collections, applying knowledge of current issues and best practices.
• Cultivate internal and external partnerships for the purpose of resource acquisition and sharing, as well as collaborative scholarship and teaching.
• Coordinate with campus stakeholders to ensure the Archives and Digital Repository is aligned with the curricular, programmatic, and institutional goals of the College.
• Set policies, procedures and priorities for collection development and public access to digital and physical collections.
• Through partnerships and collaborative efforts, seek to raise the visibility of the unique assets of the Archives and Digital Collections.
• Develop and cultivate strategic partnerships at the College, state, and regional level to address issues and challenges facing Archives and Digital Initiatives.
• Develop systems that ensure appropriate retention, preservation of, and access to unique Wheaton assets.
• Review, implement, and promote alternative digital asset management systems and identify ways to increase access of Wheaton’s unique materials to the Wheaton community.
• Manage the Archival and Digital Initiatives budget.
• Supervise professional staff members as well as student employees, interns, and volunteers.


Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an ALA -accredited Library/Information Science program, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience demonstrating progressively increasing responsibility in at least one of the following areas: archives, special collections, records management, or digital initiatives required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with higher education curriculum, pedagogy, scholarship, and learning assessment.
• Experience with management of traditional media formats and demonstrated expertise in new media, including web development tools and digital imaging technology.
• Experience with project management for large, multi-year, interdepartmental projects.
• Ability to coordinate complex details, expensive resources, and collaborative effort to achieve strategic goals.
• Ability to initiate and plan strategically for new services.
• Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively with colleagues, faculty, and staff in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment.
• Effective oral, written, and presentation skills; poise and polished interpersonal skills; and the ability to listen carefully and patiently to disparate concerns of multiple constituencies.
• Ability to make prudent, fair, sound decisions while anticipating long-range results, direct and indirect.
• Creative problem-solving abilities, initiative, perseverance, and intellectual curiosity.
