Under the direction of the Director of Student Success and Diversity in the College of Natural Sciences (CNS), develops, organizes and implements diversity initiatives designed to promote an inclusive campus environment. These activities and initiatives will include: recruiting talented students, coordinating and executing programs that foster a welcoming environment in the college, serving as an advocate and campus liaison for students from traditionally marginalized groups in the sciences, evaluating programmatic and operational effectiveness and implementing changes as necessary to improve participant experiences. This position aligns with the College’s strategic planning goals and academic success.
About CNS: CNS is the largest academic unit on the UMass Amherst campus, includes 13 departments and two schools, serves over 7,000 undergraduate students and nearly 1,000 graduate students, and has a presence in 18 buildings on Campus.
Examples of duties:
Leads recruitment efforts to increase equity, inclusion and diversity of undergraduate students within the college.
Collaborates with key offices on campus in the recruitment of students from diverse backgrounds including students transferring from community colleges.
Builds community partnerships with community colleges and attends college fair events to promote opportunities at UMass.
Manages and implements initiatives as assigned, which may include development of reports and other deliverables.
Establishes partnerships with minority-serving institutions across the country.
Serves as Retention Officer for traditionally marginalized groups in the sciences.
Participates in the planning and development of programs to recruit students into specific discipline areas.
Student Retention and Success:
Collaborates with current staff of the CNS Advising Office Staff to promote an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.
Forms relationships with university partners engaged in student success initiatives.
Provides leadership and support to underserved groups on campus to promote equity, inclusion and diversity especially in specific sub-disciplines of science.
Recommends strategies to improve the retention of underrepresented individuals, first generation and female students in STEM disciplines.
Coordinates undergraduate research opportunities related to Lee-Science Impact Program (https://www.cns.umass.edu/students/undergraduate-research/lee-science-impact-program).
Promotes graduate school opportunities in STEM disciplines.
Attends conferences (e.g., SACNAS, ABRCAMS) for student recruitment.
Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equity and inclusiveness.
Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor's degree in a Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computing, or related field.
1-year experience in higher education.
Experience working with individuals from diverse populations.
Demonstrated track record of developing and executing programs to recruit and retain undergraduates, especially from diverse groups within science.
Strong team orientation and ability to collaborate with internal and external partners.
Experience with assessment methodologies and data analysis.
Ability and willingness to travel.
Excellent verbal, counseling, and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills incorporating current technology.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Master's degree in a Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computing, or related field.
3-years experience in higher education working with individuals from diverse populations.
Required to work some nights and some weekends.
