The Biostatistics Program (http://www.umass.edu/sphhs/biostatistics) in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology (http://www.umass.edu/sphhs/bio-epi) seeks a tenure track faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor. Responsibilities will include research, advising students, teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, and service. We are interested in candidates with research experience in one or more areas of applied and/or methodological biostatistical research and who can teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Successful applicants will be dynamic, collaborative researchers whose methodological work is inspired by pressing problems in public health and biomedical sciences. Candidates should have demonstrated potential to develop an extramurally funded research program in biostatistical methods and/or application.
The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (http://www.umass.edu/) consists of 24 faculty who conduct collaborative, cutting-edge research in a variety of areas. Faculty are part of the undergraduate public health sciences major, MPH program, and doctoral degree (PhD) in public health in the school and MS program in biostatistics. Biostatistics faculty methodological research focuses on areas such as Bayesian methods, methods for high-dimensional data, machine learning, clinical trial design, time-series analysis, missing data, and survival analysis. Application areas include multi-omics, biomarker discovery, population genetics, demography, epidemiology, infectious disease, and analysis of electronic medical record data. Department members collaborate with faculty within the school, from other departments across campus, the UMass Medical School in Worcester, and Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Our program also maintains active collaborations with the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and other governmental agencies and academic institutions in the US and internationally.
The University of Massachusetts tenure-track positions provide nine months of “hard money” guaranteed salary support, plus the opportunity to earn additional salary support from other sources (e.g., grants, contracts, consulting). Candidates for this position must meet the following minimum requirements:
Terminal degree (e.g., PhD, ScD) in Biostatistics or closely related field of study at the time of appointment.
Evidence of potential to conduct independent and collaborative funded research.
Strong record of peer-reviewed publication given career stage.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; and
Demonstrated interest and ability in teaching and advising at the undergraduate and graduate level.
