Film/Video and Creative Writing-Fiction Faculty: Cluster Search in the Transdisciplinary Arts

Hampshire College is an experimenting institution with a mission to advance social justice and transform higher education. We seek creative and collaborative colleagues to join our faculty as part of a major hiring initiative across its new curriculum. We seek two (2) transdisciplinary faculty whose teaching, research, and practice engages in the Transdisciplinary Arts to support students working broadly in the arts and in the practices of Film/Video and of Creative Writing-Fiction. These positions are open rank with a preference for early career scholars and practitioners to be hired at the assistant professor level. Candidates who hold tenure or a strong track record of multidisciplinary experience may be considered for hiring at the associate or full level. The positions will begin July 1, 2024.

We seek student-centered teacher-artists whose teaching is rooted in (studio) practice and who employ an integrated approach to teaching artistic practice, theory, and history across modalities and with inclusive pedagogies; engage in a variety of forms; emphasize current transnational and trans-cultural practices and literatures; incorporate historical, critical, and/or philosophical materials; draw on cultural studies, activism, or cinema/media studies in their practice and teaching. In Film/Video we welcome those whose practice, research and teaching may incorporate film, video, sound, performance, installation, experimental media and emerging technologies and who engage with both analog and digital media. In Creative Writing we welcome those whose practice, research and teaching focuses on prose fiction but also includes non-fiction, poetry, time-based narrative, screenwriting, playwriting, and/or hybrid genres.

The successful candidate will:

• Connect at least half their normal teaching course load each year with one or two of the urgent challenges described here (https://www.hampshire.edu/academics/our-academic-program-0/learning-collaboratives) ;

• Work in individual and group settings to advise and mentor an increasingly diverse body of Hampshire students;

• Collaborate with faculty colleagues across disciplines and actively participate in governance and service committees;

• Demonstrate engagement with antiracism in their teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and/or service;

• Participate in events and forums organized by one of the Learning Collaboratives;

• Be eager to participate in continuous pedagogical experimentation.

Hampshire Faculty

Our faculty are nimble: able to teach broadly from introductory to advanced levels and eager to contribute both core courses and inventive, transdisciplinary classes that cross boundaries and stimulate and support student project work. At Hampshire, we have neither departments nor majors, so you will join and collaborate within affinities (e.g. film/photo, visual arts, creative writing) and across the College to teach and mentor students studying in every area of the liberal arts and sciences. New faculty hold great potential for contributing to and determining the direction of Hampshire.

About Hampshire

Hampshire’s academic program is unique within higher education in the United States. Students draw from multiple disciplines and methodologies to develop their own concentrations, and every student completes a year-long substantial project synthesizing their course of study as a condition of graduation. Students are provided narrative evaluations of their work instead of grades. Our student community is distinctively diverse: this year 39% are BIPOC or international, 37.5% receive Pell Grants, approximately a third are neurodivergent, and a substantial majority identify as LGBTQIA+. Building on its student-driven approach, Hampshire is implementing a radical new academic program that emphasizes urgent challenges, transdisciplinarity, antiracism, community engagement, and project-based skills. We convene transdisciplinary Learning Collaboratives (https://www.hampshire.edu/academics/our-academic-program-0/learning-collaboratives) that assemble faculty, students, and staff to address urgent questions developed by and voted on by the community. Additionally, Hampshire has implemented a “Race and Power” requirement that ensures students, staff, and faculty alike will engage in critical reflection on racial justice and equity throughout their Hampshire careers. In the letter of application, candidates are encouraged to explain how their teaching and scholarly/artistic work does or could contribute to this curricular and pedagogical vision.

Qualifications

The MFA, equivalent terminal degree, or Master’s and equivalent in professional work experience is required by the time of appointment. Qualified candidates must have demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate level and an active research agenda. An ability to communicate and work effectively within a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary campus community is essential. These positions involve full-time teaching with a five-course annual teaching load, as well as substantial student advising and participation in College governance.
