Reporting to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services, the International Student and Scholar Success Advisor will develop, organize, and implement outcomes-based programs to enhance the transition, integration, and success of international students and scholars. The role serves as a primary liaison with equity, inclusion, advocacy, and well-being units on campus to deliver holistic support for UMass’s international communities. Serves as proactive thought leader and collaborator to incorporate JEDI best-practices into the work ofInternational Programs Office (IPO) (https://www.umass.edu/ipo/) . Receives functional supervision from the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Advocacy and Inclusion.
Develop and lead outcome-based orientation, transition, belonging, and success programming for international students and scholars.
Develop, plan, and implement innovative informational and wellness workshops, programming, and related cultural events which promote the inclusion, well-being, and success of international students and scholars into the campus community and the wider local area.
Provide F-1 and J-1 immigration advising and support to international students and scholars in areas that impact their experience as students and visitors in the United States.
Conduct comprehensive assessment and evaluation of educational initiatives and learning to ensure compliance with goals, funding, and campus needs. Develop tools and measures to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and educational materials and provide outcome reporting on a regular basis. Conduct surveys, focus groups, or performs other methods of data collection in order to create metrics and track outcomes for initiatives and programming.
Identify and form collaborative partnerships to expand and sustain DEI education within IPO.
Monitor national and local events and trends as relating to international student and scholar success. Adapt existing programs to respond to changing campus populations, culture, and needs. Create new programs and educational content to increase engagement and awareness through collaboration and communication.
Collaborate with university stakeholders to ensure coherence and mutual reinforcement of educational initiatives as they fit into advancing the university’s overall diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, strategy, and approach.
Create and coordinate appropriate media, publications, communications and other informational and promotional resources that effectively focus on the needs and support services of the UMass international community. Design and develop digital learning experiences and assessments.
Serve as primary point of contact for international student and scholar cultural and affinity groups for IPO.
Serve as primary liaison to Student Affairs and Campus Life units such as Dean of Students, New Student Orientations and Transitions, Center for Multicultural Advancement and Student Success, Student Legal Services,among others. Serve as advisor and resource for international students and scholars in a variety of non-sponsored statuses (DACA, TPS, undocumented, etc.).
Maintain positive, productive and collaborative working relationships with a wide array of campus stakeholders including, but not limited to; Admissions, Registrar, Graduate School, Career Services, Office of Student Success, other departments and advisors that support the campus’s goals of student success, belonging, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Manage student workers as required.
Understand responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.
Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet department, Executive Area/Division and university goals.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor's degree and one (1) year of experience working with populations from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
International or cross-cultural study or work experience.
Strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Basic website management, publishing, and photo editing skills using common website content management systems.
Ability to form strong and effective working relationships.
Familiarity with DACA, TPS, and other US immigration statuses.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, social justice, legal studies, political science, international affairs, area studies, or foreign language.
Prior experience in student affairs or student programming in a higher education setting, including event planning.
Experience with hiring and supervision of student workers.
Ability to manage a budget.
Familiarity and experience with assessment and survey tools.
Familiarity with, or prior training in F-1 and/or J-1 regulations (must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident for access to federal immigration database (SEVIS) and related credentials).
Competency in a foreign language.
Familiarity with social media oversight and presence.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Typical office environment.
Monday - Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.
Required to work occasional evenings and weekends during the year.
