About UMass Amherst
UMass Amherst, the Commonwealth's flagship campus, is a nationally ranked public research university offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The University sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, and offers a rich cultural environment in a bucolic setting close to major urban centers. In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.
The Graduate School Office of Professional Development seeks a Lecturer/Assistant Director, for a 12-month, full-time non-tenure track lecturer position reporting to the Director of the Graduate School Office of Professional Development to start June 2019.
The mission of the Graduate School Office of Professional Development (OPD) is to position graduate students and postdoctoral researchers for success at UMass and beyond. Joining a team of highly collaborative multidisciplinary colleagues, the Assistant Director will develop and implement innovative training programs in the areas of career preparation, communication, and personal development. While the team collectively serves graduate students and postdocs across many disciplines, the Assistant Director will organize many STEM-focused programs, such as industry site visits, large-scale career exploration events, career path seminars, and individual development plan (IDP) workshops. The Assistant Director will also offer general skill-building workshops and individual consultations in areas such as networking, communicating with non-specialists, preparing resumes and cover letters, interviewing, negotiating, setting smart goals, and time management. The Assistant Director will establish and maintain strategic relationships with an expansive network of university and external partners to secure opportunities for collaborative programming and share best practices. The Assistant Director will collaborate with the Graduate School Office of Inclusion and Engagement to promote diversity and a supportive and inclusive environment for all graduate students and postdocs. The Assistant Director will operate with a high level of independence and exercise strong project management skills to succeed in this fast-paced work environment.
