The emergence and submergence history of the Bering Strait remains a puzzle in understanding both it the Pacific/Arctic gateway history but also its role in controlling the flow and stability of ocean currents between the Arctic, Pacific and the North Atlantic. We seek applications for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow (one year but renewable to two) with computer skills in dynamic topography modeling and Glacial Isostatic Adjustments to explore how regional and far field geophysics can be used to reconcile both land-based paleoshorelines and marine based paleoceanographic records to better understanding the history of the Beringian gateway and its climatic impacts. The time frame of interest concerns change over glacial/interglacial timescales since the first submergence of the Strait roughly 5 million years ago.
This work will be an exciting collaboration, starting with small workshop that could involve scientists with shared interests in the problem and with records that could be used to develop best data-model comparisons. Work in the first year could lead to an NSF proposal for new field-work and additional geochronology on land based records. Ideal candidates will have a PhD at time of hire in a quantitative subject and have some experience with GIA and DT modeling.
Examples of duties:
Develop a research plan for investigating DT and GIA for critical time slices
Be completely responsible for carrying out the computer modeling
Share in the publication of manuscripts and in scientific conferences and planned workshops.
Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Must have a Ph.D. at time of hire, with a background in Earth Sciences, Physics, and other quantitative subjects.
Familiarity with existing and emerging geophysical computer models (e.g., ASPECT and other tools like those associated with Computational Infrastructure for Geodynamics web portal).
Motivated, and comfortable with team work and collaboration.
Openness to mentoring and profession development programs routinely offered.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
While we expect office space and computer portal will be available within the Geoscience space in Morrill Science Center, the candidate may have to work remotely as COVID-19 accommodations warrant.
Preferred start date is January 16, 2021.
A May 2021 start date might also be acceptable if the right candidate is found.
