Job Description

In recent years there has been a significantly increased interest in additive manufacturing (also frequently referred to as 3D Printing), a design platform largely unexplored within infrastructure projects. Recent progress in this field has been studied through previous research from the group that examined applications focused on transportation infrastructure, such as 3D-printed repairs to deteriorated steel bridge beam ends. The post doc will be housed at UMass, however the research team of the project includes:

· Assistant Prof. Gerasimidis and Assistant Professor Chen from UMass

· Prof. Hart from MIT

The postdoc will:

  • Explore the feasibility of additive repair technologies for real corroded steel beams ends. Different additive manufacturing solutions and repair technologies are expected to be examined in the lab and on-site. Repaired beams will be tested for their strength, fatigue, and corrosion resistance.

  • Research the key factors related to the different repair technologies and equipment investigated that can impact the success of an attempted repair.

  • Leading deliverables associated with MassDOT grant on the 3D additive repair of corroded beam ends.

  • Mentoring graduate students through setting up and evaluation of LiDar scanning output.

  • Conceptualizing, setting up and assessing on-site 3D printing protocols for steel corroded bridges.

  • Preparation of research papers and reports.

  • Development of project research goals through innovative ideas and approaches.

  • Presentation of research to audiences at national and international scientific meetings.

  • Preparation of research papers and reports.

    Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Civil or Mechanical Engineering

  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing of metals

  • Demonstrated skills in writing scientific papers and project reports.
