Job Summary

The Research Fellow will support the College of Engineering’s (CoE) research activities that rely heavily on computational analysis of research metadata. Areas of impact are expected to be the research enterprise and research strategy, financial and resource allocations, educational initiatives, and other important strategic decision making. The job will also involve the development of summary reports and visualization materials.

Essential Functions

  • Develop internal metrics and prepare analysis of CoE research output, to identify areas of research excellence and strategic directions, and to support data-driven assessment of researchers based on bibliometric data and other publicly available and internal sources of data.

  • Work with the CoE departments to provide data-analytics and research support for research and educational initiatives.

  • Work with UMass lT to build and mine databases, for example in research, space allocation, finance and administration, startup research investments, and other data-driven studies for the college.

  • Provide strategic advice to CoE faculty and researchers to support their pursuit of research funding.

Other Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned across the CoE related to advanced data analytics.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Must be highly motivated with a strong sense of initiative for identifying and solving problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (both speaking and writing) clearly and effectively, verbally, and in writing, with participants, staff, supervisors and with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.

  • Organizational skills to maintain records and coordinate other tasks as required.

  • Skill in simple mathematics.

  • Extensive knowledge of personal computers and relevant software programs (e.g., data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, qualitative data analysis software) such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Competency with Google Drive, Canva, Drupal CMS, and ArcGIS Story Maps.

  • Organizational skills to plan and schedule meetings and presentations.

  • Ability to think logically.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff who are internal and external to the university.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • BS/MS degree in computer science, information management, or statistics.

  • Experience working in a research or education environment.

  • Experience with SQL and Python.

  • Experience with Tableau.

  • Experience with version control and documentation .

  • Experience with data modeling.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment.

Additional Information

  • Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week

  • Some nights and weekends required

  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule.

Salary Information

  • Up to $75,000/year commensurate with experience.

  • Temporary, non-benefitted position.

  • Initial appointment is for one year with renewal for a second and continuing based on availability of funds and satisfactory job performance.
