Job Summary
The Senior Assistant Director of Admissions - Diversity Recruitment serves as an active participant in undergraduate student recruitment, selection, and yield activities in order to meet institutional goals.
Essential Functions
Reviews and evaluates high-profile complicated admissions applications. Determines eligibility by evaluating the academic and non-academic credentials based on Massachusetts Board of Higher Education (MBHE) criteria and evaluating the differences among secondary schools as well as universities.
Manages a geographic recruitment territory. Develops relationships with students, parents, counselors and alumni in geographic area. Uses data to monitor trends and plan territory recruitment activities and communication.
Plans, executes and evaluates targeted events for application and yield enhancement. Tracks activities and evaluate results. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility and creates territory specific reports summarizing results. Produces reports of territory recruitment activities. Develops and implements strategies to aid the University in creating and maintaining a diverse community.
Plans and conducts in-person and virtual recruitment travel following university and office travel policies. Visits high schools, community-based organizations, and represents UMass Amherst at college and career fairs. Conducts large and small group presentations. Tracks fiscal expenditures. Manages publication orders needed for recruitment trips.
Represents UMass Amherst at on- and off-campus recruitment and yield information sessions and events. Conveys key institutional messages to prospective applicants and families.
Communicates with school counselors, prospective students and parents. Serves in a public relations and information role by answering questions, researching and solving problems.
Serves as primary support for all recruitment and enrollment initiatives for diverse populations, including, but not limited to the supervision of student staff contributing to programming.
Assists with the training, supervision and professional development of new admissions professional staff on recruiting a diverse population. Helps ensure staff make wholistic admissions decisions in accordance with departmental standards and goals for UMass Amherst.
Serves as liaison with academic programs and colleges to coordinate recruiting materials.
Acts as a project manager on medium- to large-sized projects/programs by establishing and executing project plans, timelines, tasks and objectives.
Participates and serves on internal special and/or standing teams and/or committees.
Serves as liaison with designated university or external program/department/college/organization.
Demonstrates capacity, skill and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
Manages the Special Group Visits calendar, and coordinates visits for community-based organizations, and high school groups with high underrepresented populations (low-income, first-generation to college, students of color). Collaborates with Assistant Director of Events, as well as other campus partners, to provide groups with tours & requested programming for their visit.
Establishes, cultivates, and maintains relationships with Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) located primarily, but not limited to, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Supports territory managers in identifying CBOs in their respective recruitment areas; and serves as liaison for CBO partnerships and outreach.
Other Functions
Reads transfer applications when necessary.
Keeps abreast of pertinent developments at the university, in higher education, and in the field of professional admission work.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor’s Degree and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience as an admissions counselor or recruiter.
Experience mentoring staff who are new to the admissions field.
Experience supervising student workers or staff.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with high school students, their families and college counselors in a variety of settings, to speak and write clearly and persuasively and to interact with people from diverse backgrounds. Must be sensitive to multicultural and socioeconomic issues.
Ability to use technology to make presentations, analyze data, and communicate with stakeholders.
Ability to read and analyze admissions applications and related documents.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, to prioritize, and to achieve goals and objectives.
Sensitivity to multicultural and socioeconomic issues.
Ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively.
Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects while exhibiting professionalism and a commitment to teamwork.
Willingness and ability to travel throughout the academic year, and the flexibility to work on weekends and evenings as needed.
Valid driver's license, proof of insurability plus the ability to obtain a university credit card.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Prior experience working in a large public research university.
Bilingual ability.
Demonstrated competency in analyzing data and translating program goals into successful operating plans.
Previous experience with a student information system (preferably PeopleSoft).
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Typical office environment.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
Required to work some nights and weekends.
Required to travel up to 10 weeks per year for both in and out of state recruitment.
This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule , which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
Salary Information
Level 27.
