Job Summary
TheStudy Abroad Advisorprovides administrative and operational support for all aspects of study abroad and exchange programs within the assigned portfolio. The position works with students, faculty and staff from assigned academic departments to provide international education opportunities and, as needed, develop new international education programs.
Essential Functions
Advises prospective students and oversees the selection process. Works collaboratively with other professional staff to deliver pre-departure orientations and re-entry advising; monitors transfer of credit and financial aid problems.
Maintains regular communication with students, parents and families, and other relevant stakeholders, throughout the cycle of a student’s engagement with the International Programs Office.
Provides pre-departure support, including assistance with application requirements, visa procurement, and other elements involved in preparing for a study abroad program.
Serves as primary point of contact for programs within assigned portfolio. Conducts site visits, as appropriate and required.
In coordination with the Director of Education Abroad and the Director of International Health, Safety and Security, monitors health and safety issues in target regions and provides support for emergency response and crisis management, as required.
Manages UMass Amherst international programs for assigned departments. Conducts faculty outreach and enhances program publicity. Performs need assessments and advises the Director of Education Abroad on program structure, curriculum, budgets, application procedures, student services, etc.
Develops budget, performs database and record maintenance, monitors exchange balances, and assists target departments with student advisement and recruitment.
Coordinates visits to UMass from partner institutions’ administrators and faculty.
Collaborates with other professional staff in the unit to support strategic goals such as curriculum integration; diversity, equity and inclusion objectives; STEM initiatives; program and outcomes-based assessments, and the development of global learning curricula.
Other Functions
As needed, supervises graduate interns, project assistants, and undergraduate employees
Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor’s degree
3 years of experience working in international higher education
Experience living, studying, or working outside the United States
Familiarity with higher education systems, international education, and study abroad in the U.S.
Willingness to travel internationally, at least, 1-2 times per year; domestically, at least, 1-2 times per year
Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills
Experience with program development, budget planning and management, and marketing
Proficiency with computer technology, including email, collaborative work platforms, and computer software standard to the study abroad industry
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Master’s Degree, preferably in International Studies, Area Studies, or Higher Education
Previous education experience with administration, program design, and/or learning/outcomes assessment
