Department Summary:

The Payroll Lead is responsible for working alongside the Payroll Manager in overseeing the payroll process to ensure accurate and timely payment of salaries and wages to employees. This role involves managing payroll systems, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and leading a team of payroll specialists.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Processing the end-to-end payroll for multi-state large-scale (10,000 +) non-profit organization

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws and regulations.

  • Work with vendors to support foreign shadow payroll (Australia & Singapore).

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of payroll specialists.

  • Collaborate with HR and Finance departments to ensure accurate employee data.

  • Resolve payroll discrepancies and respond to employee inquiries.

  • Prepare and submit payroll reports to management.

  • Implement process improvements to enhance payroll efficiency and accuracy.

  • Responsible for payroll compliance and maintains up – to – date knowledge and understanding of laws, regulations, and procedures relating to payroll operations across the region.

  • Coordinate with internal/external auditors on payroll audit items.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field of study; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Understanding of basic accounting procedures and month-end/year-end close

  • Excellent understanding of payroll regulations and compliance.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.

  • The ability to work flexible/extended hours as needed to meet payroll deadlines

  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with HR, Finance, and external vendors.

  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities to resolve payroll discrepancies and address employee inquiries.

  • Proficiency in payroll systems and reporting tools, with the ability to prepare and analyze payroll reports.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement process improvements to enhance payroll efficiency and accuracy.

  • Up-to-date knowledge of payroll compliance regulations and procedures across multi-state or international regions.

  • Experience coordinating with internal and external auditors on payroll-related audit items

  • Use of Government Contractor Software - DELTEK COSTPOINT IS A PLUS

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in payroll processing, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.

  • Strong knowledge of payroll software and systems (e.g., ADP, Workday).

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation is a plus.

  • 3+ years of experience managing end-to-end payroll processes for large-scale organizations, preferably multi-state or international.

  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll laws and regulations, including compliance requirements.

  • Experience with foreign shadow payroll processes, particularly in Australia and Singapore, is a plus.

  • Proven leadership skills with experience mentoring and developing payroll teams.
