DCR is a dynamic agency,and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, golf courses, trails and parkways. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Seasonal Forestry Assistant. The Seasonal Forestry Assistant will work outdoors in all types of weather. SPECIFIC DUTIES: Assists in the supervision of tree planting and related tree care and maintenance operations conducted by a state contractor and taking place on DCR parkways, roadways and other DCR properties in the urban Boston area. Assists in the supervision of operations to ensure that trees are planted according to DCR Bureau of Forestry standards, technical bid specifications and green industry accepted standards. Assists in the preparation of plans for planting and maintaining trees on DCR parkways, roadways and other DCR properties in the urban Boston area. Assists with data collection to record locations of planted and associated maintenance of trees and periodically checks their condition. Performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in forestry or natural resource management, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in forestry or forestry management may be substituted for the required experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License. *Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of the principles and practices of tree planting and maintenance and some knowledge of tree species. Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment used in tree planting including vehicles, back hoes and power tools and ability to learn use of data collection equipment e.g. tablet. Knowledge of safety practices used in forestry and arboriculture. Knowledge of the types and uses of vehicle trailers, water tanks and hand held power tools such as chainsaws, hedge trimmers, etc. Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in arboriculture. Ability to understand, explain and interpret the laws, rules, regulations, policy, procedures, standards and practices governing assigned agency activities. Ability to follow written instructions. Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Ability to act quickly and make decisions in dangerous and emergency situations. Ability to give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints, maps, etc. Comments: The Seasonal Forestry Assistant position begins on or about December 5, 2021 and ends March 12, 2022.
