Assistant Dean for Development
Reporting to the Dean for the Goldman School of Dental Medicine (SDM), the Assistant Dean will build effective, successful relationships with external stakeholders, including alumni, foundations, corporations and friends, to identify and secure philanthropic partnerships.
The Assistant Dean is responsible for developing and maintaining strong collaborative internal partnerships with colleagues at SDM including department chairs, faculty, and administrators. Partnerships to conceive of, design, and implement solicitation and engagement strategies that support the strategic priorities of the School may span across both the educational and research missions of the School.
The Assistant Dean will build and sustain a comprehensive fundraising program, managing a portfolio of key relationships. This position is chiefly responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting prospects to secure leadership and principal gifts. Working with the Dean, SDM Alumni Relations staff, key colleagues in central Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), alumni, and volunteers, the Assistant Dean will create, plan, advance and implement a wide range of fundraising activities, strategies, programs, and priorities in concert with the overall fundraising goals of Boston University in support of the School of Dental Medicine’s strategic plan and to position the School as a leader in the field.
This role will manage and oversee SDM Development and Alumni Relations staff. This includes supervising staff, budget oversight, and fulfilling administrative duties as required by SDM and BU-wide operating procedures.
Actively maintain a portfolio of leadership and principal gift prospects and cultivate, solicit and steward them on behalf of the School of Dental Medicine. Craft and present proposals for leadership/principal gift solicitations and prepare other fundraising materials to be used to maximize philanthropy for the Dental School’s key strategic priorities. Actively direct all facets of Dental School’s fundraising initiatives.
Play primary role in managing and tracking specific fundraising initiatives as agreed by the Dean and in consultation with DAR’s Director of School Development in accordance with the University’s and the School’s strategic plans. Work with the Dean and directly manage the School’s Dean’s Advisory Board. Work closely with board members to maximize their philanthropy to the School’s key strategic funding priorities.
Serve as a School of Dental Medicine information resource for Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). Provide communication about specific departments and programs as well as overarching School-wide initiatives. Coordinate with Major Gift Officers, Planned Giving Officers, Principal Gift Officers and the Office of Alumni Engagement in their activities on behalf of the Dental School and assist with linkage to the School’s faculty and staff as needed to advance prospect activity.
Direct the activities of the School of Dental Medicine Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving and a Dental Medicine Development and Alumni Relations support position. Partner with Dental Medicine Communications and Alumni Relations on content selection, review, and approval for alumni communications collateral, including the School’s alumni magazine and other publications as needed. Work with Development Communications on all development materials.
Serve as member of the School of Dental Medicine’s senior leadership team representing DAR in certain School administrative meetings and via other assignments as deemed critical to the fundraising and alumni engagement agenda as set by the Dean and the Director of School Development. Serve as key external spokesperson for the School.
Bachelor’s degree; a master’s degree is preferred. Additionally, advanced written communications, analytical skills, collaboration, and project management skills are required

A successful candidate will be an experienced and talented fundraiser with a successful track record of engagement with prospects and donors and the ability to nimbly and creatively develop partnerships resulting in philanthropic support at the six and seven figure level. They will have the ability and collaborative acumen to develop and to execute strategy in partnership with the Dean, faculty, and other stakeholders. Direct fund-raising experience with a proven track record of soliciting and closing gifts of $100,000 or more is preferred.
They will have a demonstrated success in working and understanding the varying priorities and approaches to fund raising at SDM (a breadth of understanding of the annual fund, reunion giving, planned gifts, donor recognition and stewardship, prospect research, and alumni events).
The successful candidate must also successfully manage up, down and across an organization, as well as individuals and teams. Leadership experience in an institution of considerable
organizational complexity typified by matrix relationships of power and influence is critical. Leadership experience in a campaign setting is preferred, and experience in the design of such an effort is a distinct preference.
While leadership skills and experience are paramount, management experience – including personnel and budgetary management and substantial strength at managing through metrics and analysis – are required.
The leadership attributes of intelligence, integrity, judgment, creativity, courage of convictions, decisiveness, fairness, empathy, and a sense of humor are necessary for success.
Ability to travel, work nights and weekends as required
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
