Associate Chief Nurse

Department Description:The BIDMC Nursing Mission is to build on a legacy of nursing excellence by caring with compassion, advancing the art & science of nursing, and advocating for the health of patients, families, and communities. The Associate Chief Nurse assumes responsibility for the planning, priority setting, coordination and evaluation of programs of overall clinical operations, nursing care, education and research for the designated clinical department, and participates with other administrators in policy development, long range planning and priority setting for the institution and Nursing Services.

The Associate Chief Nurse for Professional Development and Research oversees and sets the direction for numerous programs, including: nursing professional development across the career spectrum, encompassing orientation, practice transitions, continuing education, scholarship support, service-academic partnership programs, and administration of the BIDMC provider unit as an ANA Massachusetts provider of continuing education; the medical center’s relationships with local schools of nursing, including coordination of clinical placements and contractual agreements; organizing and supervising communication and recognition vehicles for BIDMC nursing, including a monthly newsletter, an Annual Report, and annual awards; the BIDMC Nursing Research endeavor, working with nurse scientists to support clinical staff in all phases of a research or evidence-based practice project, from idea generation to dissemination of results through publication and networking; the BIDMC Magnet program and related endeavors.

The Associate Chief Nurse assumes responsibility for the planning, priority setting, coordination and evaluation of programs of overall clinical operations, nursing care, education and research for the designated clinical department. Participates with other administrators in policy development, long range planning and priority setting for the institution, as well as, the Nursing Services.

  • Provides professional leadership and acts as a member of the PCS and MC Administrative team. Supports the guidelines for the delivery of nursing care, treatment and services. Develops an organizational plan for the designated clinical department consistent with the scope of service. Assures adequate clinical staff and performs periodic evaluation of staffing plan.   • Manages resources and participates in the annual budgeting process within the Nursing Department, ensures effective allocation of resources for patient care. Works with Nurse Managers to meet organizational financial goals, and implements mid-course adjustments as needed based on changes in volume and reimbursement expectations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Finance or Hospital Administration required. Doctoral degree in Nursing Practice or PhD in Business Admin, Healthcare Finance or Hospital Admin preferred.

  • More than 10 years related work experience required and 5-8 years supervisory/management experience required

  • At least five years of progressive nursing leadership experience.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
