Clinical Advisor - Education

Job Description:

Job Summary: The BIDMC Nursing Mission is to build on a legacy of nursing excellence by caring with compassion, advancing the art & science of nursing, and advocating for the health of patients, families, and communities. Using evidence based nursing practice, the Clinical Advisor in the educational track is responsible for needs/assessment, planning/development, delivery, coordination and evaluation of clinical education programs specific to their knowledge and expertise. This role is recognized as a key educational position within the medical center with a focus on developing and coordinating orientation programs for new staff members; and developing educational programs that support the professional nursing practice needs of the entire nursing staff. Training, evaluation and competencies for this role are overseen by a Nurse Leader to the department.

Department Specific Job Responsibilities:

This role is the Clinical Advisor for Education in our busy Ambulatory Surgical Specialties Clinic on Shapiro 3. In addition, the Clinical Advisor for Education will also serve as the Clinical Nurse Leader for the Ophthalmology Clinic.

The candidate will serve as a clinical leader for resource questions and/or scope of practice questions, help precept and orient new nurses and medical assistants, help monitor and ensure competencies are met, ensure the ambulatory practice standards are up to date (i.e. code cart, medications on site), participate in surveillance rounds along with the administrative and nursing leadership.

Along with the Practice Administrator supervise clinical lab staff (point of care testing).

Oversee procurement of medications, medical and clinical supplies.

Active member of the Nurse Specialist Council.

Provides feedback and input about clinical operations.

Essential Responsibilities:

Collaborates with nurse leaders in professional development activities. Coordinates orientations specific to the clinical specialty. Guides preceptor development. Participates actively in continuing education, in-service presentations.

Participates with Director in evaluating clinical competency of staff members.

Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team in initiating and contributing to quality improvement initiatives as well as ensuring adherence to standards of clinical practice.

Acts as a clinical resource for staff. Assesses patient and their family issues, level of acuity, staff and physician concerns and takes appropriate action. Updates nursing staff, delegates duties and ensures follow through to address patient issues.

Provides clinical consultation to nursing staff or directs them to other resources as needed.

Communicates and interprets changes in nursing practice activities and standards of care.

Identifies self learning needs and updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of current literature.

Participates in and supports nursing research by utilizing current research findings in clinical practice.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing required. Master's degree in Nursing preferred.

License Registered Nurse required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required.

3-5 years related work experience required.

Demonstrated leadership through progressively responsible nursing assignments.

Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a teaching hospital and specialty area expertise.

Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.

Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.
