Our rapid success in narrowing the achievement gap resulted in NewSchools Venture Fund naming us “2013 U.S. Education Reform Organization of the Year.” UP Education Network currently operates five schools in two cities: UP Academy Boston (grades 6-8), UP Academy Dorchester (grades K1-6), and UP Academy Holland (grades K1 – 5) in Boston; and UP Academy Leonard Middle School (grades 6-8) and UP Academy Oliver (grades 6-8) in Lawrence. Additionally, the entire staff participates in weekly professional development sessions during the school year, kick-started by extensive training in August. Role: The Dean of Students will work with the school’s Leadership Team to ensure that students demonstrate dramatic student achievement gains and internalize the school’s values. The Dean of Students will help lead the school’s efforts to create a positive, structured, consistent, caring, and disciplined school culture. Terms: This is a BASAS 10B position. Please refer to the Salary Compensation section on the Career Site for more information on compensation. Salaries are listed by Union and Grade/Step. Specific Responsibilities: Establish and ensure a joyful, structured, achievement-oriented school culture; Support teachers to hold all students to consistently high behavioral expectations; With the Director of Operations, build systems and procedures which protect the sanctity of instructional time and reinforce a positive school culture; Serve as the point person for discipline/culture issues; Assist teachers, students, and families in the effective creation and implementation of individual behavior plans; Lead staff efforts to ensure all students have excellent attendance and arrive at school on time and prepared to learn; Reinforce the effective use of a school-wide behavior plan, including managing the school’s value system (PRIDE, ASPIRE, TIGER); Ensure that the physical environment of the school reinforces school culture and facilitates student achievement; Be highly present and visible during school hours; Oversee the development and implementation of student supports and interventions; Serve on the UP Academy Leadership Team; Work 230 days per academic year; and Model the school’s values and the standard for professional behavior. Qualifications: A passionate belief in UP Academy’s mission, values, and educational model; A deep desire to work with educationally underserved student populations and their families; An unwavering commitment to the academic success and personal development of our students; An eagerness to set ambitious, challenging, and tangible goals, and a relentless drive to achieve them; An ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and a capacity to remain calm and focused when faced with unexpected challenges; Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including strong public speaking skills; A sense of humility; Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s degree is preferred; Current authorization to work in the United States – A candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment.
