Now, our School-based team is looking for a Development Associate who will assist the Goldman School of Dental Medicine development and alumni relations efforts while supporting the Assistant Dean for Development and Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving’s strategy and initiatives.

School Development at Boston University

Boston University’s 17 Schools and Colleges require a specialized and hands-on approach to advancement. Staffed by local teams that report to central Development and Alumni Relations while advancing the priorities of the individual school or college Dean, these individuals serve as the main points of contact for the work being done to advance a wide-range of fundraising and alumni relations initiatives. These staff are highly collaborative on gifts and programmatic support, coordinating closely with leadership giving, alumni relations, planned giving and faculty.

Development Associate

Reporting directly to the Assistant Dean for Development, the Development Associate must work cooperatively with a wide variety of colleagues and external constituents, including School and University leadership, faculty, staff, and alumni, to help execute strategies and work toward overall development goals. They will be an eager, creative, critical thinker who welcomes opportunities to learn about fundraising and alumni relations.


Fundraising and Alumni Relations programmatic support

  • Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Development, create, manage, update, and provide high-level accurate reports on fundraising metrics on an as-requested basis

  • Run monthly and annual reports that measure and assess performance based fundraising metrics

  • Assist with the development, compilation and maintenance of various reports that help to identify new annual fund leadership gift, major gift and principal gift prospects.

  • Serve as part of the team building the pipeline of major gift prospects; identify and provide preliminary prospect and philanthropy research to the Assistant Dean, including using Internet and other tools

  • Work with GSDM and DAR DevCom to produce materials that support the school’s strategic priorities

  • Working with the Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving manage school Annual Giving initiatives: including but not limited to Giving Tuesday and Giving Day; partner with central Annual Giving team on multi-platform content development; develop and execute school-specific communication strategies in partnership with GSDM Marketing and Communications teams

  • Manage school stewardship activities: interface with Stewardship & Donor Relations (SDR), Gifts & Records, and DAR IT teams as need to ensure timely acknowledgment of all donors; partner with SDR to arrange donor-recipient meetings as needed; produce monthly gift acknowledgements; secure donor/host stewardship gifts; author donor acknowledgment notes for the Assistant Dean and Director (as needed); update school acknowledgement template letters on a yearly basis; develop and deploy new acknowledgments as needed for special projects/initiatives; maintain donor rosters

Event Management

  • Assist with Dean’s Advisory Board (DAB) meeting logistics (as needed); staff DAB and alumni board meetings and provide administrative support (as needed)

  • Serve as primary support for key School events including Alumni Weekend, and Spring Weekend; manage and execute event logistics working with DAR and school partners as needed

  • Plan and execute school fundraising and alumni relations event details including mailings, catering, technology, name tags, signage, printing, etc.; coordinate logistics with other University departments and external vendors (as needed); manage RSVPs; assist in composing pre- and post-event correspondence

Administrative Support

  • Develop queries and reports using the BBEC database for use in school and DAR communications, events, and fundraising outreach; using the BBEC database and DAR best practices for database management, develop systems for tracking alumni engagement and queries to extract information as needed

  • Provide research support: update donor and volunteer briefs, perform donor basic research utilizing internet search engines, Evertrue, and other tools as provided by DAR to identify prospects and increase knowledge of alumni and donors

  • Manage post-travel expense reports; manage and track the schools’ fundraising budgets; create and circulate travel and event itineraries as needed

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations GSDM Development Office: Duties will include maintaining calendars and scheduling meetings for the SD, managing and tracking the department’s budget; screening and directing phone calls for the office; photocopying, filing, and faxing; ordering and organizing supplies; coordinating travel schedules and details as well as post-travel expense reports

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Three to five years of related experience

  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly

  • Excellent computer skills; strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office

  • Familiarity and comfort with online project management tools

  • Experience with customer relationship management software (Blackbaud CRM, Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management, Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, Banner, Ellucian, etc.), and willing to learn more a plus.
