Boston University Industry Engagement is an exciting new function at the University that holistically addresses the needs of companies wishing to engage the University in Corporate Sponsored Research and Corporate Relations providing a bridge between industry and the research and educational domains of the University. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, the Director of Industry Engagement, Engineering and Physical Sciences will be responsible for developing and implementing the University's Industry Engagement strategy for the Biomedical Engineering, Photonics, Engineering and Physical Sciences industry verticals, crafting meaningful and sustainable relationships with industry partners leading to increased investment in University research in alignment with corporate priorities.
The Director, Industry Engagement and Physical Sciences will also work closely with the BU CELL-MET Industry Liaison Officer. CELL-MET is a multi-year federally funded Engineering Research Center working at the forefront of tissue engineering to build scalable, low-cost technologies for growing clinically significant cardiac tissues from cell-level building blocks to fundamentally change the treatment of heart disease. The CELL-MET grant is in its final year of its first term and will be eligible for a five-year extension in the Summer of 2022.
Industry Engagement is a fast-paced environment where creativity, flexibility, and teamwork are crucial. In this role, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team across University functions with faculty researchers and industry partners helping to bring BU research out of the lab to have real impact in solving some of society’s greatest problems.
This is a full-time position through the summer of 2022. The Director, Industry Engagement and Physical Sciences would then have the opportunity to transition to the CELL-MET Industry Liaison Officer upon grant extension.
Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred. Five to eight years’ work experience.
Entrepreneurial and dynamic individual with a dedication to advancing scientific research.
Biomedical Engineering, Photonics, and/or broader Engineering industry experience in product management, product marketing, technology strategy, business development, and/or research administration required. Solid understanding of scientific research. Experience forming research partnerships with academic and/or other institutional research organizations desired.
Biomedical Engineering, Photonics, and/or broader Engineering academic experience in corporate sponsored research, sponsored programs, technology transfer, grant management and/or industry engagement desired.
Familiarity with other dimensions of industrial partnerships including intellectual property and technology transfer, federal grants, grant and contract management, and philanthropic development.
Proven record of leadership. Consultative and accessible leadership style, outstanding written and oral communications skills, integrity, and managerial skills.
Ability to gain credibility and trust with multiple layers of sophisticated organizations from the University to corporations. Ability to interact in a professional and positive manner with all levels of staff. Excellent interpersonal and listening skills.
