What you’ll do here:

The Universal Experience Product team enables Higher Education course materials to be used in cohesive buying, adoption, access, and using experiences for faculty and students! This team develops the vision and strategy for customer experiences that can be comprised of processes, workflows, services, and products that deliver high value, digital experiences at scale.

The Director of Product for Universal Instructional Experiences will specifically lead the vision and strategy creation for core instructional and learning experiences for higher education products. Examples of such experiences are online reading, testing, and writing. As the Director, you will determine the experience, how the experience will be expressed in our products, and will be the business owner for the technologies that support these experiences.

You will be a thought leader for the experiences (and their users). Forward-thinking and problem solver for the experience you are responsible for and the leader of a team comprised of marketers, technologists, instructional and learning designers, content developers and producers, researchers, and sales professionals across Cengage. Provide deep product expertise needed to lead the organization to make strategic decisions. The role spans many activities -- from strategic to tactical with multiple partners – requiring the ability to flex quickly.

Create your product strategy by developing hypotheses, evaluating data, analyzing market and competitive trends, testing ideas in the market, iterating, and ultimately making decisions based on evidence and insights. While keeping in alignment with business priorities, you take customer needs from concept to launch, focusing on timely delivery, holistic quality, ease of use, and how to support a high value, differentiated, and useful experience.

To achieve these goals, you are an integrator, leading a cross-functional team by encouraging a creative and collaborative environment aligned toward a collective mission. You are consistently problem solving, bringing the team together, and actively considering the expertise of all members. You are ultimately accountable for the success of your products.

Crucial Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Possesses a clear understanding of the Cengage ethos and embodies these attributes

  • Seasoned relationship builder with high integrity who successfully collaborates with stakeholders and empowers team to creatively develop differentiated product experiences

  • Provides team leadership as an integrator for a cross- functional team, bringing the team together toward a unified strategy and a common mission, bridging gaps between different functions and aligning all teams involved to the customer’s holistic experience

  • Develops, executes and iterates product vision and strategy based on deep market mastery – trends, customer needs and challenges, and competitive landscape, and aligned with overall higher education strategic direction to deliver desired business metrics. This strategy is differentiated and delivers unique value based on customer needs

  • Designs provide vision and product strategy in the absence of a blueprint. Possess the ability to start from scratch, challenge status quo, and build plans that can be implemented across the product portfolio

  • Resolves implementation of product strategy across the higher ed product portfolio; this will include creating standards and guidelines, recommending product types and integration needs, working with the commercial team to determine commercial models, and defining success metrics that will drive continuous improvement and development needs

  • Specifies the business outcome and context of the business needs while providing sufficient scope for technology partners

  • Articulates the trajectory of the product experience over a multi-year time horizon

  • Sets clear objectives and timelines for achieving milestones to release a product to market on time and within scope; consistently shares strategy and progress to partners

  • Ultimately accountable for overarching holistic product strategy to which all team members will contribute in specific ways through clear deliverables based on expertise

  • Utilizes excellent project management skills, organization, and clear communication to drive decision-making and progress throughout product development lifecycle

  • Leads dependencies and resolves tradeoffs in and across components of the experience to ensure value drop release phases and achievements are met

Basic Skills (Required)

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Minimum 5 years in product management, marketing, product development, brand management, consulting, or other relevant management role

  • Cross-functional team management and leadership experience

  • Ability to work within a high degree of Internal and external complexity

  • A fierce commitment to driving results in the pursuit of unselfish goals; a bias for action, results, and transparency

  • Excellent at developing and articulating vision and strategy that meet business goals

  • Possesses curiosity and skilled at asking questions that lead to connections and insights

  • Collaborative problem solving and working style to inspire change through influence; honed interpersonal skills

  • Self-disciplined with a high degree of accountability and personal urgency

  • Strong financial analysis and modeling skills and an understanding of business metrics

  • Natural curiosity and willingness to learn paired with a desire for continuous improvement

  • Proven writing and verbal presentation abilities enabling her/him to prepare and present information and recommendations to a diverse and often senior audience

Preferred

  • Master’s Degree

  • 3 years minimum cross-functional team management experience

  • Experience bringing new technology products to market

  • Experience with agile development processes and recurring release cycles
