Specific Title: Equity Co-op
Description
The Office of Equity is charged with monitoring and working to ensure employment and educational equity within the Boston Public Schools. The Office has primary responsibility for investigating concerns regarding possible bias-based incidents, including sexual misconduct, and taking proactive steps to prevent such incidents and ensure a welcoming, respectful, and equitable education, employment, and access for all members of the BPS community.
We are seeking applicants for two full-time Equity co-ops for six months (40 hours per week). The co-ops will support the office in performing a range of responsibilities, including:
Screening phone calls and conducting intake interviews with reporting parties and witnesses
Serving as the initial point of contact for school leaders reporting allegations of bias-based or sexual misconduct
Assisting with investigations of bias-based incidents, including helping to document investigatory meetings, collecting relevant evidence, and drafting and/or proofreading case summaries
Entering data into an online case tracking system, and monitoring and documenting trends
Contributing to the team effort by accomplishing related administrative tasks and completing special projects, as needed
Applicants with a passion for equity and inclusion, and an ability to relate well to people from a wide variety of backgrounds are preferred. Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, are a plus, but not required.
Co-op students will receive increasing responsibility as they master the essential functions of the job. The Office of Equity is eager to support our co-op students to develop new skills, prove their abilities, and rapidly expand their duties.
Qualifications:
The Office of Equity seeks undergraduates who have:
A GPA of at least 3.0
Demonstrated interest in civil rights, equity, and inclusion
Interest in education and/or employment law and related issues
Prior work experience in legal, educational or other related settings
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with internal and external BPS stakeholders
Ability to work independently and employ excellent judgment, exercise discretion, and maintain unwavering integrity
Training:
Equity co-ops will receive training provided by the Office of Equity and other Boston Public School staff on a variety of topics, including:
Education and employment discrimination law, and related internal policies
Reasonable accommodations under state and federal law, and related internal policies
Opportunity and achievement gaps in urban education
Operationalizing racial and other forms of equity in decision-making and policy-setting
Select topics in civil rights and education

Transportation: 12 minute walk from the Northeastern campus; accessible by public transportation (5 minute bus from Ruggles)
Wage Type: Hourly
Wage (Minimum): 18.00
Wage (Maximum): If the co-op student substantially increases their responsibilities, their hourly wage may be increased during the placement.
