This vacancy is the result of temporary funding through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER). The duration of the funding means the position is temporary and will last for one year only. Hired candidates may be excessed or non-renewed from the position for the following school year.POSITION OVERVIEW: The Intervention Director at Charlestown High School reports to the CHS Head of School and serves on the CHS Leadership Team. This administrator position is responsible for oversight of student learning and enrichment, as well as staff management and operational leadership for a pilot Extended Learning Time (ELT) program at CHS. The position will have leadership duties during the school day and afterschool programming. During the school day, the Intervention Director is responsible for supporting the management and development of teachers and support staff within the CHS Life Skills Small Learning Community (SLC), as well as supporting the oversight of daily instruction and operations of the Life Skills SLC. The Intervention Director collaboratively plans professional development aligned with the school goals, leads the smaller team’s efforts to create a positive, structured, consistent, focused and restorative school culture, and takes responsibility for the teaching and learning within the SLC. The Intervention Director will work in conjunction with the CHS Director of Special Education for leadership of the Life Skills SLC during regular school hours. The position will have a delayed start/end time on a daily basis (for example, 10am-5:30pm) to allow for management of the ELT. Responsibilities of the role include: Teaching and Learning Leads school improvement within the SLC, including co-planning and facilitating SLC CPT meetings Provides instructional coaching and feedback during the school day and ELT, to educators and ensures instructional quality in the classroom via curriculum review, classroom observations, and oversight of enrichment and supplemental academic support Develops systems for monitoring students’ academic progress in SLC and ELT, including working with the CHS staff to assist with data tracking and impact reporting Leads initiatives to improve student attendance and academic performance through ELT programming Communicates with parents and community members both proactively and responsively to respond to student needs Implement and coach teachers in implementing practices and policies supporting Special Education; ensure compliance as well as positive school experiences for students with disabilities Operations Maintains communication within SLC via daily or weekly announcements and other methods Coordinates coverage of ELT staffing with Director of Special Education, Assistant Headmaster and other support staff Monitors and secures ELT/SLC area for student safety Supports student scheduling process during the school year, including student activity placement during ELT Maintains ELT supplies and facilities needs (communicates with appropriate staff about ordering supplies as well as facilities needs such as copier, paper, water, furniture, etc.) Maintains student files and records, including electronic and paper records as appropriate Collaborates with the Special Education Director to monitor special education students’ progress and with ELL Director to monitor ELL including maintaining copies of IEPs and other learning plans and ensuring that teachers are familiar with them. Works with the Facilities and Custodial Staff to ensure facility issues are properly handled, including maintenance and management of staff/vendors Oversees all aspects of food service during ELT, including quality of snacks, managing staff/vendors, meal tracking, and compliance Oversees all aspects of ELT transportation including communication with families, BPS and vendor management, arrival and dismissal procedures, and setting and managing staff duty schedules Manages logistics of communications and external relations through family letters, weekly staff notes, surveys, and visitors Serves as the point person for managing staff, volunteers, and visitors during ELT Attends 2 sporting events per season III. School and SLC Climate Ensures opportunities for student voice in SLC culture and operations, including ELT Develops systems for monitoring student support, including counseling, mediation, and communicating with outside agencies/resources, bridging ELT to school day staff Collaborates with school-wide student support team and SLC counselor to identify and support at-risk students and to provide a supportive environment for all students Works with school wide safety team to develop consistent discipline policies and consequences, and ensure appropriate implementation in the SLC and ELT; develops systems to prevent disciplinary/ safety problems; and makes decisions and implements solutions regarding serious or ongoing disciplinary infractions Coordinates and supervises SLC community-building activities such as field trips, celebrations, assemblies, open houses, etc. Outreach Communicates with parents and community members both proactively and responsively to respond to student needs Explores and promotes partnerships with community organizations, in alignment with CHS goals, such as early college, career pathways, and the arts. Serves as the liaison for the ELT with community and business partners (PIC, Peer Health Exchange, BUILD, Pathways partners, etc.) Develops and manages student recruitment strategy to ensure that the school begins the academic year with full classes Maintains enrollment at or above pre-determined enrollment numbers for ELT throughout the year Ensures that family info sessions, school tours, and the ELT enrollment process are planned and executed School Leadership Works with the Head of School and Leadership Team to help devise and accomplish school mission Participates in weekly after school meetings on school-wide operations and school improvement, and communicates and implements decisions in the SLC Recommends course offerings for the SLC to be included in the master schedule and ELT options Lead interviewing and hiring for ELT and participates in hiring for and staffing of the SLC Additional duties as assigned by the Head of School Qualifications Required: Masters Degree in Education or related field. Three (3) years experience successful teaching experience Appropriate Massachusetts licensure for School Principal/Assistant Principal. Candidates with alternate educator licensure will be considered with appropriate levels of experience. Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators and parents. Ability to establish a multi-cultural atmosphere that enhances individual growth and promotes a positive self-image. Experience with budget preparation and implementation. Advanced technology skills Experience with full process involved in development and implementation of master schedule. Preferred: Spanish speaking Teaching experience in a 7-12 educational setting in a core content area. Experience as a school administrator. Experience designing and implementing professional development around race and equity and serving as a resource for students and staff around these issues Prior work with progressive discipline, restorative justice, and implementation of the BPS Code of Conduct Experience in large, fast-paced school environments with significant extracurricular commitments, extremely high levels of email communication, and parent engagement with a diverse, multilingual population Terms: BASAS, Group 10B, 211 days Please refer to the Salary Compensation section on the Career Site for more information on compensation.
