Center Philosophy

The Children’s Center’s philosophy is based on blending a variety of early childhood educational philosophies and approaches, including Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Constructivist. Children at the Center are viewed as active participants in their own learning, making choices and seeking out experiences that further their development. Educators at the Center strive to create a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that supports children as they learn and grow at their own pace through play-based and child-centered experiences. Educators at the Center believe in viewing each child as an individual, and they understand the importance of getting to know each child and meeting them where they are developmentally.

Summary Description

The Lead Teacher role has the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety and well-being of all the children in their classroom. In addition, the Lead Teacher’s role is to support the mission and philosophy of the Center, provide a nurturing, consistent, developmentally appropriate environment that meets the cognitive, emotional, social and physical needs of young children, develop and maintain family relationships, collaborate with co-teaching team, and take part in continuous professional development. The Lead Teacher must abide by all EEC licensing standards, and all policies and procedures set forth in the employee handbook.


  • Lead Teacher Certified by MA Department of Early Education and Care (EEC)

  • Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s Degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an early childhood setting

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with others

  • Reliable and conscientious

  • Computer skills (MS Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook, Kaymbu, COR Advantage)

  • Willingness to increase knowledge in the field

  • Certificate of CPR and first aid training (recommended)

  • Organized, ability to multitask

  • Ability to work independently

  • Attentive to confidentiality of records and other information

Reporting Structure

  • The Lead Teacher reports to the Administrative Team, which includes the Assistant Directors and the Director

Essential Functions & Duties


  • Oversee welfare and safety of children in a classroom

  • Plan and maintain developmentally appropriate classroom space, materials, and equipment

  • Implement and oversee developmentally appropriate classroom curriculum and activities in the classroom

  • Create a classroom environment that supports children in learning about and being exposed to diversity through age-appropriate materials and activities

  • Help children adjust successfully to the classroom setting

  • Foster positive relationships between children and their peers

  • Promote positive discipline practices that support problem-solving and conflict resolution

  • Supervise toileting, toilet training, and diapering practices

  • Evaluate children’s development on an ongoing basis using

  • Maintain children’s attendance, ongoing developmental growth, and portfolio of progress through documentation

  • Complete formal observations and assessments of children in classroom


  • Create welcoming environment for families

  • Develop and maintain positive and effective communication with families on a daily basis

  • Prepare for and conduct family conferences

  • Attend family meetings on topics related to early education and care and Center policies, among other things

  • Attend individual family meetings as needed


  • Supervise and train Assistant Teachers in the classroom

  • Supervise volunteers

  • Engage in weekly team meetings

  • Maintain team meeting notes and plans for team development

  • Attend mandatory monthly staff meetings

  • Serve as a leader in the classroom to ensure a positive, collaborative, and professional atmosphere

  • Serve as a model and provide support to other Teachers

  • Work with Administrative Team to coordinate in-service trainings to meet professional development goals

  • Assist with orientation of new staff members and Assistant Teachers

  • Demonstrate knowledge around program policies and procedures

  • Give feedback to Administrative Team and take part in performance assessments

  • Work cooperatively with all other staff members

  • Time sensitive responsibilities, including but not limited to assessments, are expected to be completed in a timely manner. This may require time spent working outside of a teachers scheduled shift

Professional Growth

  • Continue to take course work as needed to meet performance goals and maintain EEC certification

  • Keep abreast of developing practices in the early childhood field

  • Continue development of technological skills necessary to support classroom learning and center functions

  • Attend onsite and offsite trainings

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred

  • Must be at least EEC Lead Teacher qualified as well as CPR and First Aid certified

  • 3-5 years teaching experience
