LEADERSHIP GIFT OFFICER, METRO, NY

Leadership Giving at Boston University is comprised of a team of fourteen staff, based in Boston and covering domestic regions, responsible for raising capital gifts of six and seven figure gifts toward the Campaign for Boston University. This team collaborates closely with the school based teams, as well as with principal gifts, planned giving and alumni relations in order to fund programs, scholarships, professorships and more at the university.

JOB SCOPE

The Leadership Gift Officer, Metro NY works closely with the AVP Leadership gifts, Director of Leadership Gifts, and colleagues across the Schools and Colleges in planning and advancing a wide range of fundraising priorities, engagement programs, and university activities.

Examples include: pursuing leadership gifts for scholarship and endowed chairs; identifying and cultivating prospects; developing solicitation strategies and coordinating the involvement of other administrators, faculty, alumni, and/or volunteers; overseeing various special projects as assigned by the AVP of Leadership Gifts and Director of Leadership Gifts, New York.

Functions:

  • Prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and closure of leadership gifts at the $100,000 plus level with a focus on Metro New York region. Coordinate and orchestrate prospect strategies with the appropriate school-based development officers, faculty, and deans, and work in tandem to assure the highest and best use of time, budget and personnel. Work with supervisors to devise specific strategies and timetables for the successful solicitation of individuals, including the use of planned giving vehicles such as gift annuities, trusts, and bequests.

  • Maintain a close working relationship with members of a regional volunteer network designed to provide counsel, identify prospects, assist with specific solicitations, and other programmatic initiatives as necessary.

  • Work closely with colleagues in Alumni Relations and University events to ensure high quality, high impact engagement opportunities and activities as a component of the overall development strategy.

  • Establish long-range goals and objectives for development programs and activities in the assigned region that reflect academic priorities for private support. Prepare operating plan designed to facilitate achievement of these goals and objectives as a component of the University-wide leadership gifts plan.

  • Coordinate with Stewardship to keep donors up to date on their gifts and impact; happenings at the University in their areas of interest; and major changes within the University as a whole. Inform schools and departments while moving prospects through leadership gift lifecycle.

Required Skills

Three to five years of experience in a development office, or an academic fundraising unit is preferred. Additionally, experience in an institution of considerable organizational complexity typified by matrix relationships of power and influence is critical. Significant travel, nights and weekends, are required.

Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build relationships in a highly collaborative environment is a must, as is the ability to "manage up" in working directly with University leaders; engaging laterally by building relationships of trust and mutual value added with colleagues across campus; and managing "down" to ensure the support and cooperation of staff both within and outside of Development. A capacity to think strategically and creatively I necessary; this involves the ability to inquire about and listen to a prospect's needs, and then to understand and determine how to best develop a successful strategy for engagement. Critical listening, proactive work ethic and being a self-starter are critical as are having a professional demeanor.

Candidates must have a Bachelors’ degree; Master’s preferred and a minimum of three to five years’ advancement experience. Additionally, advanced written communications, analytical skills, collaboration, and project management skills are required. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
