The DEI Manager will partner with the Assistant Dean of Outreach and Diversity (ADOD) to develop, implement, and assist in driving the vision, strategy, and programs of Boston University, College of Engineering's, Office of Outreach & Diversity. The College of Engineering actively seeks to diversify and support its student and faculty ranks, recognizing that diversity of experience deepens the intellectual endeavor. We seek to embed the principle that pluralism within a learning community is a source of insight and effectiveness. The DEI Manager is responsible for co-developing and implementing plans to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the College of Engineering in accordance with best practices. The DEI Manager will assist in the recruitment of graduate students from historically underrepresented groups in engineering by attending and/or organizing faculty and student representation at appropriate affinity conferences, events, and graduate programs. They will be responsible for co-developing, leading, and tracking cohort-based programs to support the success and retention of undergraduate and graduate students from historically minoritized groups in engineering. The DEI Manger will advise graduate and undergraduate engineering students on a case-by-case basis regarding concerns ranging from personal to academic; and will offer referrals to internal and external resources as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies to foster the colleges diversity goals with input on evaluation plans.

  • Recruitment of historically minoritized graduate students in engineering - Co-develop and implement recruiting strategies to attract students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Review current practices, policies, and systems to assess and analyze the extent to which they support or hinder the student experience and the colleges diversity goals.

  • Collect and analyze statistical data to evaluate the colleges population in accordance with diversity standards and goals.

  • Create and lead innovative programs and supports for historically underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Advise engineering undergraduate and graduate students on both academic and personal endeavors and make referrals when/where necessary.

  • Work closely with the College of Engineering student affinity groups and faculty advisors.

  • Collaborate with other departments and colleges across Boston University, including the Diversity and Inclusion Office, where appropriate.

  • Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.

  • Attend various College-wide and University meetings and events with, and or in the absence of, the ADOD.

  • Analyze evaluation data and college data analysis to report on efficacy of initiatives.

  • Identify trends and use data to streamline programming, training, and recruitment.

  • Represent Boston University, College of Engineering at meetings, conferences, and with partner institutions.

  • Coordinate logistics for events/meetings/seminars

  • Develop programs under the guidance of the ADOD

  • Advise marketing department on developing inclusive marketing materials

  • Prepare and present reports to ADOD

  • Create a DEI database of contacts, partners, stakeholders promote collaboration

Required Skills

A cover letter is required for consideration.

  • Masters degree with 3-5 years of experience or higher in STEM, social science, industrial and organizational psychology, or other field relevant to the position.

  • Background in higher education or experience working with undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging programs.

  • Inclusive leadership skills

  • Experience in planning events.

  • Ability to build and foster relationships with staff, undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and administrators.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Self-starter and team player who possesses initiative, versatility, flexibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate issues and solve problems creatively and effectively.

  • Ability to handle varied tasks concurrently in a fast-paced and sometimes pressured setting.

  • Must be willing to travel and be available for occasional evenings and/or weekends.

  • Facility with standard office software applications and database tools.
