THIS POSITION IS WITH THE MEDICAL SERVICE AND IS LOCATED AT THE JAMAICA PLAIN CAMPUS

The incumbent in this position as a clinical education nurse will perform duties associated with the gastroenterology services under the supervision of the Chief of Gastroenterology at the VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) and/or designate.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will serve as a key member of the liver care team in charge of a clinical program designed to identify and contact veterans chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and diagnosed with advanced liver disease (ALD) due to chronic HCV infection or other etiologies. The incumbent will assist the team by educating affected veterans about specific disease treatments, facilitate their linkage to care, and providing information about resources associated with chronic disease management and prescribed medications. The incumbent will participate in one-on-one communications with patients and communicate with Primary Care and other medical professionals within the associated treatment process. In addition, the incumbent will participate in clinical research and will support other Gastroenterology-based RN positions as required.

The clinical education nurse will:

  • Coordinate and facilitate the connection between veterans and HCV/ALD treatment program

  • Facilitate the goal of identifying veterans at increased risk of chronic infection with HCV with a particular focus on providing 100% screening for health care seekers who are part of the 'baby boomer' birth cohort (1945-1965) or represent other high-risk population for HCV infection at VABHS

  • Utilize currently available registries of patients with chronic liver disease such as the 'HCV dashboard' and 'ALD dashboard' to contact veterans and provide them with direct educational training on the natural course of their liver disease, associated risks, and the potential benefits of specific therapies and health maintenance programs such as screening/surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)

  • Provide one-on-one patient-focused education to promote behavioral change and empower veterans to improve specific treatment compliance

  • Foster appropriate dialogue between veterans and health care providers and facilitate this process by scheduling initial appointments in the outpatient liver clinics of the GI section

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: * United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. * Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. * Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. * Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. * Proficiency in spoken and written English. * Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: 4 Years experience as a registered nurse with direct experience in gastroenterology.
