Job Description

BU Law is seeking a part-time instructor to teach a spring 2022 seminar in negotiating complex commercial contracts to foreign-trained lawyers enrolled in its LLM in American Law Program. The class meets for two hours/week for 14 weeks.

Negotiating Complex Commercial Contracts

This seminar exposes international LLM students to how business lawyers effectively and ethically represent their clients in negotiating complex commercial contracts. Through role plays, in-class discussions and written assignments, students will learn strategies to move negotiations from a binary win/lose result to a win-win outcome that can lay the groundwork for a productive start or continuation of a contractual relation. The seminar is hands-on, with a focus on developing practical negotiation skills in contexts that replicate actual legal practice with an unfamiliar opposing party. While students will have an opportunity to draft business and legal provisions of commercial agreements, the emphasis will be on strategies to effectively negotiate these provisions. Enrollment limited to 18 students. Three credits.

Required Skills

Requirements: JD degree and significant experience in negotiating range of commercial agreements in legal settings. Ability to communicate effectively and build rapport with professionals from broad range of international backgrounds, for whom English is not their primary language. Prior teaching experience a plus.
