Job Description

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and VA Boston. The successful candidate will participate in an NIA grant-funded Boston Early Adversity and Mortality Study (BEAMS; MPIs: Lewina Lee, Dan Mroczek). BEAMS uses administrative data linkage to create a prospective, birth-to-death dataset based on three Boston-based longitudinal cohorts (Normative Aging Study, and the Grant and Glueck cohorts, which comprise the Harvard Study of Adult Development). The Fellow will conduct secondary data analyses to evaluate lifespan pathways linking dimensions of early experiences to later-life health outcomes. Opportunities to join related projects considering the role of psychosocial stress exposure on lifespan health, and mechanisms which transmit or alter the effects of stress on health, are available. Additional work will include data management, preparation of manuscripts and scientific presentations, and assisting with grant applications. The Fellow will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers in Psychology, Psychiatry, Epidemiology, and Economics from BU, VA Boston, Northwestern University, and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Required qualifications:

  • Experience with managing and programming large-scale datasets;

  • Evidence of advanced quantitative skills and knowledge of longitudinal methodology;

  • Doctoral degree in Psychology, Gerontology, Social Epidemiology, Health and Human Development, or closely related fields by the Fellowship start date.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Substantive background in the areas of aging, stress, health, cognition / Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), and lifespan development;

  • Experience in one or more of the following: multilevel modeling, structural equation modeling, intensive data analysis, survival analysis; data harmonization; integrative data analysis.

The Fellow will receive mentorship to facilitate transition to an independent research career through acquisition of analytic, writing, and other research skills. For applicants with a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, clinical opportunities and supervision meeting licensure requirements are available. Through affiliations with BUSM, VA Boston, and the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, the Fellow will have access to ample scientific and professional development resources, and opportunities to explore collaborations across medical and social science disciplines.

This is a 2- to 3-year position beginning late Spring or Summer 2021. The position is located at VA Boston (Jamaica Plain campus). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work may be necessary.

Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their applications by November 6, 2020. Applications submitted after November 6 will be considered on a rolling basis. To apply, please submit the following materials (items 1-4 as a combined PDF) to Dr. Lewina Lee (lewina@bu.edu):

  • Curriculum vitae;

  • A statement of interest describing your academic (substantive and quantitative) training, research experiences, interests, and career goals (single-spaced, 2 pages maximum);

  • Two to five representative reprints or preprints;

  • Names and contact information of three to five references;

  • Two letters of recommendation emailed directly to lewina@bu.edu.
