POSITION TITLE: Program Developer, UPK Department of Early Childhood JOB TITLE: Program Director (Basas 9) Reports To: Executive Director, Boston Public Schools Department of Early Childhood Position Overview: The Program Developer (PD) will primarily assist teaching staff in implementing BPS early childhood curriculum for Boston’s K0 and K1 classrooms in the district and UPK community-based programs. Currently, the EC department uses Focus on Early Learning, designed to engage children and empower them to develop language, math, critical thinking, and socio-emotional skills that prepare them for long-term academic and life success. The Focus PreK -2nd curriculum is currently under revision and will expand to include the development of a FCC Focus Multiage curriculum for Family Child Care Providers. The Program Developer will actively participate in the Focus on Pre-K revisions and Focus on Multiage curriculum writing. The Program developer will build upon the collaborative coaching model established in BPS that enhances the teacher’s ability to foster students’ ownership of their learning. The Program Developer will be an active staff participant in developing the Universal Pre-K coaching model and the Department of Early Childhood. The Department’s mission is to develop system-wide policies for early childhood programs and to create professional development systems to improve the educational experiences of children in BPS and the early childhood community at-large. Responsibilities: In partnership with Providers and the Early Childhood department, develop the Family Child Care Focus Multiage curriculum and observation tool. Conduct school and classroom-based coaching sessions to implement the BPS EC Department curriculum in KO/KI Classrooms. Components of the coaching sessions include a planning conference with the instructional team (teacher and administrator), demonstration-observation, and a debriefing with the participating instructional team. Provide individualized, classroom-based follow-up with the site team to support implementation and instructional practice. Systematically record coaching supports to inform policy and practice. Coordinate with EC Dept coaches and administrators to review data points and revise coaching support/model as needed. Conduct school and classroom-based coaching and professional development aligned with the Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC), National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC), and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Facilitate professional development for family child care, community based and district educators, and state and national audiences. Includes peer observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions. Reviewing materials to ensure consistency of approach and alignment with BPS curriculum, NAFCC and NAEYC accreditation and linking with the professional development. Mentor and collaborate with UPK Organizations to meet UPK requirements and develop sustainable practice. Other duties as assigned by the Boston UPK Director & Executive Director of Early Childhood Qualifications - Required: Bachelor’s Degree Strong background in early childhood and family childcare Three years of experience teaching & coaching teachers in the area of early childhood education DEEC licensing, NAFCC and NAEYC accreditation. Knowledge of adult learning theory, early childhood special and bi-lingual education Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills Interpersonal skills to share proven instructional approaches with teachers and administrators and provide advice and coaching Strong organizational skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines A self-motivated individual who can meet deadlines. Team Player A positive attitude and open mind that approaches problems from all angles Qualifications - Preferred: Spanish speaker Master’s Degree Three years of Family Child Care experience teaching and/or coaching Background in the knowledge of adult learning theory, early childhood special and bi-lingual education Three years experience working as an Early Childhood mentor, director, teacher, education specialist or coordinator. Over three years experience teaching/coaching teachers in the area of early childhood education DEEC licensing, QRIS, and NAEYC accreditation.
