Job Description

Doctoring Year 1 is an innovative, integrative curriculum incorporating communication, physical exam, clinical reasoning and professional identity formation for 1st year medical students. The course utilizes lectures, longitudinal small groups, online learning modules, clinical learning with 4th year medical students, and longitudinal clinical placements. The Essentials of Public Health (EPH) course will provide students an overview of the public health approach through active learning and community projects.

The Program Manager will act as the administrative contact for Essentials of Public Health (EPH) and Doctoring Year 1 (Doc1) and ensure continuity across these multifaceted courses. Provides general oversight of the courses’ operation, plan and will work collaboratively with others who are involved in the curriculum. Demonstrates initiative and ability to work independently while consulting with the course leadership. Must have an ability to problem solve student and faculty issues. This general oversight work will also include proposing and administering quality improvement initiatives in course administration and information delivery.

The Program Manager will:

• Manage the Essentials of Public Health(EPH) and the Doctoring Year 1 curriculum in conjunction with the EPH, Doctoring and Clinical Reasoning course leadership.

• Efficiently coordinate logistical requirements to ensure smooth curricular process.• Collaborate with faculty to prepare communications and course materials.• Support the EPH and Doctoring Year 1 course leadership and course faculty in the implementation of educational methodologies such as team-based learning in lecture, and electronic teaching methods to prepare for lecture and small group.• Schedule the standardized patient assignments to small groups• Coordinate the assignment process for 1st year students to their longitudinal clinical placements• Manage community placements during EPH• Assist with faculty development for the academy of master educator faculty• Oversee the administrative processes for the 4th year medical elective in teaching the 1st year students including managing anticipated absences.• Liaise with faculty and administrators of the Medical Education Office, the Population and Public Health curriculum, the PrISM curriculum, the CSSC and the Doctoring Year 2 Program to provide a broad-based approach to course support.• Assist with the identification of program improvement initiatives.• Research and suggest innovative methodologies to improve curriculum and delivery of course content in the classroom.

Required Skills

  • Prepare and manage syllabi and course materials with attention to detail, in collaboration with the course leadership. Suggest modifications to the paperless course syllabus and online materials as needed.

  • Communicate course information to student population through Blackboard-Learn and other means such as in person, via email, via announcements on Blackboard Learn or the listserv, and via the Student Advisory Committees.

  • Ensure that course materials are complete and posted to Blackboard Learn within the established deadlines.

  • Meet regularly with the EPH, Doctoring and Clinical Reasoning leadership team to discuss student and curriculum issues and prioritize essential tasks.

  • Schedule student meetings with faculty and workshops as needed.

  • Schedule Student Advisory Council (SAC) meetings and follow up on appropriate action items from these meetings.

  • Keep track of student attendance at mandatory sessions, when possible.

  • Act as the primary liaison with students for administrative concerns related to EPH and the Doctoring Year 1 curriculum.

  • This individual should be comfortable experimenting with and recommending new technology in the form of browser extensions and other application- and web-based programs that may assist students and faculty dealing with the paperless curriculum.
