Job Description:

Job Summary: Provides optimal education, assessment, and nutrition care for the medical weight management and bariatric surgery patient in a comprehensive weight loss center. Serves in lead capacity as program matures.

Essential Responsibilities:

Performs initial nutrition assessment/screening of potential candidates for medical weight loss and/or bariatric surgery. Assesses education status and requirements of patients/families, implement plan of action according to individual needs. Develops and coordinates group and individualized nutrition education curriculum and instruction material with comprehensive language and aesthetic quality.

Leads all initial and pre-operative nutrition education, including review of clinical and biochemical data, to formulate a nutrition care plan encompassing socio-economic and psychosocial factors. Oversees the development of weight loss focused and nutrition related education modules for patient education and support groups.

Calculates REE for patients at regular intervals. Provides basic exercise plans and nutrition recommendations based on anthropometric data (including REE, SECA, Indirect Calorimeter).

Counsels medical weight management (non-surgical) and post-operative surgical bariatric patients to ensure dietary compliance and nutritional adequacy. Assesses/adjusts diet regimen based on diet tolerance, weight changes, lab values and clinical parameters.

Participates in development of clinical pathways associated with patient flow from initial nutrition visit, through follow up course. Collaborates and communicates with patient's providers to maintain continuity of care.

Serves as a preceptor for dietetic interns, medical and nursing interns/students and resource and lecturer for health care providers and general public. Plans, conducts, supervises and formally evaluates the educational experience and performance of dietetic interns in medical and bariatric surgery areas.

Makes follow up telephone calls and emails to patients with questions regarding meal replacements, diet, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and lab results. Attends weekly patient multidisciplinary rounds to discuss patient care and nutritional issues.

Participates in research programs, under the direction of the Medical and/or Surgical Director of Bariatric Program. Interprets, evaluates and utilizes pertinent current research findings related to nutritional care, obesity and bariatric surgery. Participates in data collection for research and quality assurance projects while problem solving with patient issues.

Develops and expands professional proficiency in the area of obesity medicine, including medical weight management and bariatric surgery patients. Participates in hospital in-services, educates health care professionals on the goals and methods of treatment for medical and surgical patients. Publishes in peer-reviewed or lay publications. May present at professional conferences.

Evaluates all nutrition products, vitamins and minerals, and meal replacement products based on their patient appropriateness, safety, availability and cost. Contributes to cost containment by careful use of supplies.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Nutrition required. Master's degree preferred.

License Lic. Dietitian/Nutritionist required., and Registration Registered Dietitian required.

1-3 years related work experience required.

Currently Registered and Licensed as a Dietitian in Massachusetts.

Clinical knowledge of digestion and nutrient absorption physiology.

Experience working in a Medical Weight Management setting

Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management (CSOWM) certificate

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
