Job Description

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant (RA) will perform research activities using approved techniques to support grant-funded research studies on the Boston University Medical Campus including the Boston University School of Public Health (Department of Community Health Sciences). The broad focus of these mixed methods research studies is on substance use in vulnerable populations, with specific objectives focused on reducing HIV transmission and other health consequences of substance use and increasing access to health and prevention services for these populations. The RA will conduct participant recruitment, develop and administer questionnaires and interview guides, conduct participant interviews and behavioral interventions in community-based settings, enter and manage study data, perform administrative tasks, assist in grant preparation, perform literature searches and synthesis and interpretation of data, and assist in drafting and editing research protocols, manuals, and reports to funding agencies and ethical review boards (IRBs).

Required Skills

•Strong knowledge of or willingness to learn software applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, REDCap, NVivo, STATA, SAS, and related programs.

•Knowledge or willingness to learn software and applications for maintaining reference databases (e.g., Mendeley, EndNote, RefWorks, etc).

•Interest and 2-3 years experience in research on substance use and/or HIV a plus.

•Ability to work in a multi-cultural, diverse, decentralized environment, as a member of an interdisciplinary research team.

•Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of social, racial, and ethnic populations.

•Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and record keeping skills.

•Ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities at the same time effectively.

•Ability to interpret and record data and make informed judgments regarding patient care.

•Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information.

•Flexible to work evenings when required.

•Bachelor’s degree required
