JOB TITLE: Acceleration Academy Teaching Fellowship: ELA Focus during February vacation 2022 Stipend Position - $3500 REPORTS TO: School Leader ACADEMIC/NON-ACADEMIC: Academics Overview of Program: The Academics department is allocating funds to support Acceleration Academies to increase learning time and access to high-quality educators over school vacations. The Academies are week-long academic programs outside of the traditional academic school year breaks [February 22- 25, 2022 (ELA Focus, Key Ideas and Details with Informational Text) and April 19 - 22, 2022 (Math Focus, specific domains associated with major work of the grade)]. The Academies are designed to accelerate student learning in small academically rich settings by leveraging engaging, standards-aligned lessons. Lessons build toward a project/problem-based performative task which provides students an opportunity to integrate their learning, strengthen academic skills and engage with complex text and tasks. The District will fund programs in regions 2-10, serving students in grades 3 through 10, focusing on prioritizing attendance for our English Learners, Students with Special Needs, and our ELSWDs. Overview of Teacher Fellowship: Plan and deliver theme-based lessons focused on specific content grade-specific standards (RI1 - RI3). Students will strengthen their academic skills, especially respective to Key Ideas and Details standards, through engagement in complex texts and tasks. The ELA Academies will take place during February vacation, 22-25, 2022. Fellows will work in small classrooms with a 12 to 1 student-teacher ratio. BPS Principals and Managerial staff may elect to apply for the Acceleration Academy Teaching Fellowship and receive the stipend if they will otherwise be able to meet their 223 working days (principals) or their S6500 days (Management). To do this, individuals will need to submit a detailed work plan outlining days worked prior and after the acceleration academies that meet the 223 working day or S6500 threshold. Principals can also be the academy site coordinators without the stipend and count the time toward their 223 working days. Duties: Training and Planning Participate in 5-hours of district-led professional learning sessions; Develop theme-based lesson plans that build toward a project/problem-based performative task which provides students an opportunity to integrate their learning, strengthen academic skills and engage with complex text and tasks; Submit pre-program deliverables; Instruction Deliver in-person instruction to students, designed to accelerate student learning in small academically rich settings by leveraging engaging, standards-aligned lessons; Deliver lessons that build toward a project/problem-based performative task which provides students an opportunity to integrate their learning, strengthen academic skills and engage with complex text and tasks; Work with site coordinator, enrichment teachers, and other academic teachers to thoughtfully integrate academics and enrichment into the program to address the program’s essential questions and educational goals. Collaboration and Evaluation Work with the site coordinator and enrichment teachers to gather student-level data and compile student progress reports/assessments; Submit end of program deliverables; Participate in mandatory feedback/debrief activities. Schedule: Pre-Academy: Pre-planning with academy team, review and preparation of lesson materials, attendance at pre-academy PD, and submission of pre-program deliverables. During Academy: The Acceleration Academy day will be for 5 hours. Teachers are required to be available for office hours with students as needed and directed by the site coordinator and school leader, in addition to direct instructional time (February 22-25, 2022). Program start and end times vary by school. Post-Academy: “Wrap-up” duties (such as student progress reports, artifact collection, materials inventory, feedback) occurs at the end of Academy programming. Qualifications: Principal, administrator, or certified academic teacher; BPS Principals and managerial staff may elect to be an Acceleration Academy Teaching Fellow if they are otherwise able to meet their 223 working days (principals) or their S6500 days (Management) To do this, individuals will need to submit a detailed work plan outlining days worked prior and after the acceleration academies that meets the 223 working day or S6500 threshold. Experience teaching Students with Disabilities; Experience teaching students who are English Learners; At least three years of professional teaching experience; Relevance DESE certification; Experience with developing & implementing project-based curriculum, lesson plans; Experience with engaging students in complex tasks and texts; Preferred: Close relationships with selected student demographic; Current authorization to work in the United States; A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.
