Boston Public Schools Successful Transition Education Program (STEP) (Managerial Tier B) (SY24-25) in Boston, Massachusetts

General Description & Goals The Successful Transition Education Program (STEP) is a short term program at Boston Latin Academy for students returning to school after an extended absence due to illness or hospitalization. Students are referred to STEP for many reasons that affect their attendance, academic success and social-emotional learning in school. STEP combines academic support, clinical support and care coordination to facilitate each student's re-entry and re-intergration to school. Students meet with the STEP Academic Coordinator weekly to make up work, organize and prioritize assignments, receive tutoring and review their make work plan. STEP provides a safe space for a smooth transition back to Boston Latin Academy that minimizes the stress of re-entry and encourages students’ academic success in school. Responsibilities Attend re-entry meetings and progress meetings for STEP candidates. Liaise with parents, school counselors, teachers and community providers to determine additional support for students during re-entry and transition to school. Implement individualized academic support and transition plan including (daily check-ins, modified schedule, work plan, tutoring) to support students returning to school from extended absence. Communicate with teachers regularly to identify core content or essential work that students are expected to learn and complete when they return to school from an extended medical absence. Check-in with students regularly about their academic progress, work plan and transition. Facilitate progress meetings for students who need additional support in the program. Maintain regular school-home communication with parents to share students’ progress. Consult and collaborate with school psychologist during re-entry and transition about social-emotional supports, coping skills, and strategies students can use to support their transition back to school. Develop academic plan in collaboration with teachers using work tracker and oversee students’ work completion in the program. Document and track student’s progress, maintain student schedule in transition program. Oversee students’ transition out of the program. Support students enrolled in STEP in crisis situations. Attend school, district and statewide professional development meetings and trainings to learn about best practices for academic coordinators and transition programs. Perform other duties as assigned by program supervisor or school principal. Required Qualifications Minimum of three years professional experience working with students in an urban setting Ability to use data management, organizational and technological tools and programs The ability to connect to and work with students using a variety of methods while always maintaining a respectful and caring manner Adhere to BPS’s Non-Discrimination Policy (see below) Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with and motivate a diverse set of stakeholders, including school staff, students, families and community agencies toward a common goal Energy, enthusiasm, patience, a positive attitude and a sense of humor Candidates must have current authorization to work in the United States by their first day of employment. Salaries are listed by Unions and Grade/Step. NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement. School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
