Job Title: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Instructor

Status: Non-Exempt, hourly

Reports to: Healthy Living Director

POSITION SUMMARY: Instructs small group classes for cancer survivors in a safe, supportive, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.


  1. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes for cancer survivors, as developed by the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.

  2. Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.

  3. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.

  4. Keeps accurate class attendance records.

  5. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.

  6. Attend staff meeting and training to stay current with latest fitness trends and educational information.

  7. Instruct your scheduled class at least 90% of each quarterly session.

  8. When unable to work, instructors are responsible for obtaining their substitutes from the current staff list and notify supervisor of arrangements.

  9. Create a noncompetitive atmosphere.

  10. Assess each class to determine their ability to follow your instructions. Adjust the workout to the various skill levels of class participants. Offer exercise modifications frequently.

  1. Ability to conduct classes and activities.

  2. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.

  3. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


  1. Required certifications: CPR, AED, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.

  2. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Instructor certification

  3. YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification within 6 months of hire.

  4. At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
