The Park School is a Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school in Brookline, MA dedicated to excellence in education. The Grade 1 teacher is a member of the school’s Lower Division and reports to the Head of the Lower Division. This position comes with the responsibility of working with faculty and staff to teach Grade 1 in support of the school’s mission and curricular goals. The ideal candidate will bring a history of collaborative, self-directed work as well as a good sense of humor. The ideal candidate will also have at least three years of teaching experience, preferably Grade 1, and draw upon that understanding to inspire members of the Park community.

In addition to outstanding teaching ability, the position requires expertise with the social and emotional needs of this age group and the ability to balance the encouragement of intellectual growth with creating a learning environment that supports the needs of a range of learning styles.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Participate in the school community, including faculty and committee work, school duties, and activities such as clubs and assemblies

  • Design, plan, and implement student-centered lessons which demonstrate a deep understanding of the academic discipline, curriculum, instruction, child development, and best practices, aligned with the goals and mission of The Park School

  • Establish and implement expectations for student safety and conduct; and procedures and routines, consistent with School policies

  • Meaningfully integrate technologies into class lessons, for online learning as well as in school learning

  • Assess student performance and engagement, including academics, behavior, and social-emotional needs, while communicating directly with students, colleagues, and families both formally and informally when necessary

  • Collaborate with all Park School employees as appropriate

  • Participate in and contribute to an adult learning community by engaging in meetings, discussions, committees, task forces, and professional development.

  • Complete administrative tasks and coverage duties as assigned (student supervision, attendance, reporting, documenting curriculum, etc.)


  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of teaching experience at the elementary level is preferred.

  • Excellent knowledge of child development, latest education theories and practices, and current trends in education and professional development

  • Experience integrating the use of academic technology into classroom teaching

  • Familiarity with Lucy Calkins’ Reading and Writing programs

  • Experience with Wilson “Fundations” phonics program preferred

  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, and other adults

  • Strong communication skills, including experience in writing student comments and other school-related documents

  • Demonstrated experience working in a culturally diverse community

  • Motivation for and interest in professional development

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and learning
