Department:Statistics DepartmentPre-Employment Screening:Education, IdentityJob Function:Faculty & Student Services Duties & Responsibilities:Concentration Advisor and Lecturer reports to Director(s) of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and provides advice and counsel to over 200 Harvard undergraduates (concentrating, considering concentrating, or pursuing secondary field or joint concentration in Statistics), primarily on academic matters and curricular planning; track and course selection, thesis support, and career guidance. Concentration Advisor will hold a dependent lectureship appointment and teach undergraduate courses and/or tutorials. More specifically, Concentration Advisor and Lecturer will:

  • Provide substantive one-on-one academic advising to Statistics and joint concentrators, secondary students, interested freshmen and other students, coordinating efforts with Harvard College Advising Programs Office as needed and with DUS and faculty deans as appropriate to address student issues.

  • With DUS, assess and recommend undergraduate curricular revisions and participate in implementing such changes. Contribute to ongoing assessment to make undergraduate program more effective as key member of undergraduate education committee. Work with Education Program Administrator to develop and update concentration-related web and print literature.

  • Facilitate identifying and matching students with faculty research mentors and oversee thesis process (conceptualize workshops, trainings, and other resources) and meet with students to monitor status and address issues.

  • Contribute to existing (e.g., freshmen fortnight, sophomore declaration) and develop new academic and social activities to improve sense of community among Statistics concentrators.

  • Teach one Statistics course per term. May assist to restructure existing course(s), develop new course(s), and/or teach summer school course(s).

Concentration Advisor and Lecturer will work closely with Department faculty members, other teaching staff (preceptors, teaching fellows), and Student Programs Administrator. Beyond Statistics Department, and collaboratively with Harvard College Advising Programs Office, Office of Undergraduate Education, Bureau of Study Counsel, Registrar’s Office, and with colleagues in similar roles and faculty members at FAS and SEAS Departments where Statistics concentrators may have thesis advisors.
