The Harvard Medical School is not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.Department:Research AdministrationPre-Employment Screening:Criminal, Education, IdentityJob Function:General Administration Duties & Responsibilities:The Harvard Medical School (HMS) Office of Research Administration (ORA) provides pre-and post-award management by assisting Principal Investigators and Faculty with proposal submission, award administration, and reporting. ORA offers a range of expertise and manages a diverse group of portfolios in support and advancement of HMS’s mission.
Reporting to the Director, Grants & Contracts (Director), the Compliance Officer works independently to develop and implement compliance review and monitoring processes designed to ensure that HMS research and sponsored programs are compliant with applicable laws and regulations, sponsor terms and conditions, and University and HMS policy. The Compliance Officer will be responsible for operational management of HMS’s export control compliance program and will collaborate with the Office for Academic and Research Integrity to update the program and processes as necessary to maintain compliance with evolving export control laws and regulations. Will provide guidance on questions relating to international research and foreign components under sponsored awards. The Compliance Officer also reviews agreements related to joint appointments and faculty effort and provides guidance related to other support documentation and other related disclosures to sponsors. Will be responsible for making the judgment call whether compliance and risk mitigation plans are sufficient or if the risk level warrants escalation to higher level ORA or HMS leadership for further discussion.

The Compliance Officer works closely with the Office for Technology Development, Office of the General Counsel, Office for Academic and Research Integrity, and the office of the Provost. Liaises with school/department administrators and researchers, as needed to raise awareness on compliance risks and resolve identified issues, uses knowledge of applicable laws and regulations and University/HMS guidelines and policies to provide advice to department customers, and provides a high level of customer service to each party. Will participate in the University’s Export Control Council and other committees and working groups, as applicable.
The Compliance Officer will also play an active role in creating and maintaining ORA business processes and templates as necessary to ensure compliance. Will embrace a continuous improvement mindset and contribute to developing and implementing process improvements aimed at streamlining ORA's work while enhancing the level of service provided. Will collaborate with the Director and other team members in offering training on appropriate topics. Other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate for this position will work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, high volume environment.
